This New England boiled dinner has been a popular dish among our family for a long time. When we moved to California in 1960, I'd make it often to remind us of the East Coast. We're back home now and continue to enjoy this scrumptious dish. —Natalie Cook, Scarborough, Maine

Can you cook a smoked butt in a crock pot?

If you would like to see how to smoke a pork butt, check out this post. I usually smoke the pork one day. Refrigerate it overnight. Then remove the large layer of fat and pop it in the slow cooker on high for 4-5 hours the day you want to serve it.

How long does it take to boil pork shoulder?

Bring to a boil, then reduce to a gentle simmer. Let the meat bubble away until it's fork-tender. (A fork will easily glide into the meat. For pork shoulder, this takes two to three hours.)

Can you cook pork shoulder on high in crockpot?

Cook the pork either on low for 8 hours OR on high for 5-6 hours OR until the meat is fall-apart tender. The cook time will vary based on the weight of your pork and the size/temperature of your slow cooker, so it's best to check it after about six hours on low and 4 hours on high just to see how it's doing.

Can you boil a pork shoulder roast?

Properly boiling pork shoulder will allow the meat to tenderize to the point that it will simply fall apart when it is placed on the plate. Boiling the pork shoulder, at the beginning, for one to two hours speeds up the cooking process without sacrificing texture and flavor.
