Cooking Rice In A Pressure Cooker

It is really fast to cook your rice in the pressure cooker.

To Rinse Rice or Not Rinse Rice?

That is the question. There are all sorts of theories about why you should or shouldn’t rinse your rice before using it.

I always rinse my rice. Why? Because that is what my father taught me to do.

When I was a little kid, we would have this big pile of rice in a sack in the kitchen that was imported by ship from Surinam.

My father would take a couple of cups of rice and clean it because it had a lot of starch and starch sticks.

He always said, you never know where the rice has been or what was put on it so wash it with warm water until the water is clear.

To this day that is what I do because the rice doesn’t stick together as much as it would unrinsed.

If you do not want to rinse the rice that is totally fine as well.

Should I Rinse Rice Overnight?

I never rinsed any type of rice for such a long period of time. I’m sure there is no hard to put rice in water and leave it for an hour or more.

The main reason why I never do this is that I forget. So, when I plan on cooking rice all I do is rinse and go.

Let me know if you rinse your rice longer and how your results are.

Now it is time to take out your Instant Pot, Crock-Pot Express, or electronic pressure cooker so we can cook some rice.

Add a cup of water or broth to the rice cooker. Take the same cup that you use to measure the rice to measure the water.

You can add salt but that is totally optional. I never add salt to my rice before cooking and do not miss it but feel free to add.

No close the lid of the Instant Pot and secure it. Turn the valve to the sealed position.

Select the Manual or Pressure Cooker option and cook on high for 4 minutes.

Always use the same cup to measure the rice and the water. Use the same settings so set to Manual or Pressure Cooking for 4 minutes on high.

Natural release for 5 minutes then quick release.

Some pressure cookers require more water. If your rice is still hard after cooking add 1/4 cup extra water.

Should I Use The Rice Preset On My Pressure Cooker?

You can use this setting but I never do. I always set my Instant Pot to the setting described above and it works perfectly every time.

How To Store Long Grain Rice

The best way to serve rice is when made fresh and serve immediately. If you have leftover rice let it cool as fast as possible (within 1 hour) and store it straight away.

You shouldn’t leave cooked rice at room temperature too long as rice can contain bacteria that can cause food poisoning.

You have several options to store rice:

  • Refrigerator – you can store rice perfectly in the refrigerator and use it the next day. I never leave rice in the fridge longer than a day. Store it in an airtight container or a resealable bag
  • Freezer – if you want to keep it longer you can store it in the freezer. Put it in an airtight container or freezer-friendly resealable bag. Label it before you store it in the freezer for up to 1 month. Longer is possible but can have an impact on the moisture and taste of the rice

Freeze uncooked rice. You can find stories that you can extend the shelf life of rice by freezing it before cooking.

I have never frozen uncooked rice or put it in the fridge as I do not see the need for it.

How To Reheat Rice

When I reheat rice, I always use it in fried rice. That way I know I warmed my rice thoroughly.

It is very important to heat all of your rice because of bacteria that can survive in cooked rice.

So, heat your wok or skillet to hot and add your rice. You can reheat from frozen. Just stir it continuously until you see all of the rice is piping hot. Then serve.

You can also reheat the rice using the microwave but I never do this. If you do, add 2 tablespoons of water to an airtight container with the rice.

Put the container in the microwave and heat for 3 to 4 minutes or until it is really hot through.

Check if the internal temperature is at least 165℉ or hotter and serve immediately.

You can also use your Air Fryer to reheat rice. The easiest way is to use a cake barrel and add the rice into it.

You can also use an Air Fryer to make Air Fryer fried rice which is made with leftover cooked rice because besides cooking rice in an Instant Pot you can boil rice in an Air Fryer as well.

What is the water to rice ratio for long

A 2-to-1 ratio, liquid to rice, produces soft, tender rice. Chewier rice will result from using a 1-to-1 ratio, or from adding a bit more water. I usually go with a 2-to-1 ratio for cooking a long-grain rice like basmati. Traditionally, basmati rice first is soaked for 30 minutes to as long as two hours.

How long should you cook rice in an Instant Pot?

The Instant Pot Rice is done in 15 minutes, ~30 minutes faster than our rice cooker. If you're going to use an Instant Pot or electric pressure cooker, you'll love how you don't need to wait for the water to boil, tend the pot, or stir the rice like you would cooking it in a regular pot.

What is the ratio of water to rice in an Instant Pot?

The rice to water ratio for Instant Pot rice is 1 to 1. This means that for every cup of rice you need 1 cup of water. Measure carefully, and use the same measuring cup for both the water and the rice so that your measurement is precise. This way, your rice will turn out perfect every time.
