Same issue here. Xbox Series X Show I think the usb port is switching to a lower power mode. Plugged in or not the controller is always connected via wireless. I CAN get the battery charging animation, but I have to "toggle" or "trick" the controller to get it. And it doesn't last. Which is what makes me think its a power saving feature. And that will need to be corrected with a console or controller firmware update. To get the battery charging animation: While on the main Xbox screen. unplug the charging cable. Leave the battery installed. re-plug charging cable. Tap the xbox button on the controller. The battery charging / plugged in icon (top right corner should change to show charging.) The animation will continue for 2-3 minutes. Then it stops. It goes back to showing just plugged in. This is what makes me think the port is conserving power. I'm assuming this was an oversight, as this is not a few feature for MS. Nor is charging something over USB a new technology. I am not going to do anything about this myself. Not returning anything. I think this will be fixed in a future update. Your mileage may vary. Do what you want. :) IntroductionIf you have the the xBox One Play & Charge Kit and it is not charging via USB, try this super fast easy and cheap to free fix. I make no promises but every time i tried this, i was able to fix it. So try it out and see if it works. If not you only wasted 2-5 minutes. First make sure the controller works with the USB cable. Unplug the battery and connect the USB. If the controller turns on, CONGRATULATIONS!! this fix may help you. Get some cardboard or some Low-Density Foam Weatherstrip Tape ($2.23 at home depot 17ft. so yeah.) For this fix Ill be using the Low-Density Foam Weatherstrip Tape. Cut a small piece of. I mean small. The size of you pinky nail. Place the tape in the center of the controller where the battery sits. Then put the battery in. GENTLY squeeze. While you’re holding the battery in place, connect the USB cable. Wait for it, (takes a second or so,) And orange light on the USB cable should light up. If it does, replace the battery cover while the cable is connected. that way you can see if the connection gets lost. If it does try again with the same piece of tape but cut it just a bit smaller. IT WILL WORK. Note- The cover WILL be harder to put back on- Careful don’t break the latches. Dont worry too much though they are thougher than the seam. Also- I recommend that you connect the controller to a PC and not the xBox. Im not sure how well the Xbox deals with being switched from wired to wireless controller for potentially several times in a row.
Conclusion That’s it. You can now charge your controller like it was intended. At least we are not going to have to give more money to MS to get this fixed. How do you know if a Xbox One controller is charging? How to know if your controller is charging. When the controller is charging, the battery indicator light on the face of the controller will flash. When the controller is fully charged, the light will turn solid white.
Why won't my Xbox controller turn on or charge? If your controller won't power on at all, replace the controller batteries with fresh ones and make sure they're inserted correctly into the controller. Note The Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 uses a built-in battery, so if you're using an Elite Series 2, skip this step.
