You're welcome. This time I tried out BareEase & Cream numbing cream, a Lidocaine-laced serum you rub on before hair removal (like waxing or laser hair reduction) to dull the pain. I gave it a go at my last laser touch-up appointment. Here's what happened... First, a little about the product itself: It's actually a two-step process. About 30 to 45 minutes before your appointment, you apply the cream to the whole area. Then you slip on a pair of disposable latex panties that hold the cream against your skin so it doesn't rub off on your clothes. Application was easy—the cream just took a minute to absorb and the panties fit well. And it even doubled as entertainment when a friend asked me via text what I was up to and I replied in all seriousness with "Sitting in rubber numbing panties." Now, I'm sure you're wondering if it worked. It did help a bit. I could still feel the "snapping" of the laser, but when we got to the particularly tender areas that usually make me flinch, my body reacted, but the pain was a lot less that usual. Could it have been a placebo effect? I doubt it--Lidocaine is a proven numbing agent. And, honestly, even if it was, I would have forked over $25 when I was getting Brazilian waxes to take my pain from "Oh, dear lord, please stop" to "Ouch. This hurts a little. I deserve a cupcake after this"—even if it was all in my head. Oh, and one warning: Make sure to bring another set of undies with you to wear home. This didn't occur to me until after the appointment. Oops. To learn more or order a set, head over to the Bare Ease site—shipping is free at the moment. Then tell me: Are you tempted to give it a go? ***More Ways to Get Glamour: Download Glamour on your iPhone or iPad! Like freebies? Enter the latest Glamour sweepstakes! How does laser hair removal work?Laser hair removal can be an effective method for long-term hair reduction or removal on certain areas of your body. During the treatment a laser emits light at a specific wavelength that targets the pigment (melanin) in your hair. The energy from the light is absorbed and converted into heat that then damages the hair and parts of the hair follicle from which it grows. Lasers are most effective when hairs are in the active stage of their growth cycle and because not all hairs are actively growing at the same time laser treatments may need to be repeated. The number of hair removal treatments needed also depends on factors such as your hair thickness, skin type and hair colour, with most people needing between 2 to 6 sessions. Laser hair removal, for example, may not be as effective on blonde or grey hairs as it is on dark hairs which contain more melanin and some types of lasers may be more effective on darker skins than others. A gap of 4 to 6 weeks is generally needed between treatments to allow time for any regrowth. Your therapist will be able to give you advice on a treatment plan based on things such as your skin and hair colour, the location of the hair and the type of laser being used. Is laser hair removal painful? There can be a large variation in the level of pain and discomfort experienced during laser hair removal. How much pain you feel may depend on which part of your body is being treated – the more sensitive the skin the more discomfort you are likely to feel. The underarms, bikini line and the skin around your lips, for example, tend to be more sensitive and so potentially more painful than other areas such as the legs. Laser removal of hairs on your back can also be painful because of the large number of hairs being removed. Numbing the skin with a local anaesthetic such as Emla before starting your laser treatment can help minimise any pain or discomfort you may feel.
