For all our recommendations use a KickStart Fertiliser to give your new lawn the best possible start.

It’s often a slower start to the warmer season in Victoria.  Buy your bulk lawn seed and wait until there’s more warmth in the soil following winter.  In Victoria you can choose Warm or Cool season grasses.  If you choose a cool season mix ensure you plant it with enough time for it to establish before the hot summer weather arrives, otherwise the young plant will struggle.  If you want to sow a warm season grass, wait until the summer weather has arrived to sow so that they are germinating at the optimum time.  Warm season grasses need very warm soil to take off.

SPORTS TURF:  Our Commercial Sports Blends are ideal for the renovation of any sporting surface.  These are cool season blends, perfect for Victoria.

In cooler, hillier regions of Queensland it's possible to sow cool season grasses.  Choose a warm season grass like a couch or kikuyu if you're north of Brisbane and have a mostly hot climate year round.  These grasses will cope with the consistently warm/hot weather and still look green.

Identify Your Grass

There are about a dozen different grasses, and most lawns contain a mixture of them. Find yours.

Although the grass may be greener on your side of the fence (if not, here’s help with that), turfgrasses are not all alike.

That, says our resident lawn and garden expert Ashton Ritchie, is why some yards are brown in winter and some are green.

One of the best examples of different grass types can be found on a golf course or playing field. Look closely and you’ll notice that the turf in some areas is markedly different in color and texture than other areas.

There are about a dozen different grasses, and most lawns contain a mixture of them. In some cases, like dichondra, your lawns may not be a grass at all. Usually, though, lawns fall into one of these two types:

  1. Warm season grasses that thrive in warm-weather regions, such as the Southern United States.

  2. Cool season grasses that do best with extreme temperature fluctuations, such as those found in the North, Northeast, and Pacific Northwest.

It’s important to know your grass type so you can take the best possible care of your lawn. For example, if you pick a Northern weed control for a Southern lawn, you could actually harm it and then, yikes, you’ve got a problem, Houston.

Will grass seed grow if I just throw it down?

The short answer – is yes. Grass seed can grow if you just throw it on the ground, but the success of the germination will be much different compared to when you do the right preparation and sowing technique.
