One of the most highly anticipated aspects of the upcoming film is the introduction of Spider-Man 2099, a version of the hero from a future dystopia.

Oscar Isaac is a Once in a Generation Talent

Oscar Isaac has had an incredible acting career. He has played a wide variety of characters, from his role as a brilliant yet troubled tech wiz Nathan Bateman in the small cast sci-fi flick Ex Machina to his musical turn as a struggling folk singer in the Coen Brothers period piece Inside Llewyn Davis. He has even been a part of big-budget blockbusters, portraying the Resistance fighter pilot Poe Dameron in the Star Wars sequel trilogy.

Marvel fans have already been privy to Isaac's acting chops. He played Marc Spector, also known as Stephen Grant (...and Jake Lockley), the titular antihero in Moon Knight on Disney+. Prior to that role, he portrayed the titular villain Apocalypse in X-Men: Apocalypse. It was revealed that he would play Spider-Man 2099 during a hilarious post-credit scene of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse that saw the character in a 1967 Spider-Man cartoon. Spider-Man 2099 may very well be one of the most fascinating iterations of the character. His secret identity is Miguel O'Hara, who serves as a geneticist for the seedy corporation Alchemax. It is located in Nueva York, a dystopian version of New York. While attempting to recreate the incident that gave the original Peter Parker his abilities, he accidentally spliced his DNA with that of a spider, giving him a similar set of superpowers.

However, the experiment left O'Hara with a few features that differentiate him from another version of Spider-Man. Unlike some certain iterations, he can shoot real webs from his wrists. Additionally, he has sharp talons on his hands and feet, which allow him to scale any surface, and he has a pair of fangs that enable him to shoot venom. Obviously, these frightening features will make the character an intimidating force in the upcoming, and Oscar Isaac has exactly the imposing vocal range to portray this effectively.

A More Serious Side of Spidey

Spider-Man is widely regarded as one of the funniest superheroes in the Marvel universe. He shoots off hilarious quips almost as often as he shoots webs. This is definitely the case with Miles Morales, the version of Spider-Man who is the main character in the Spider-Verse films. Given the character's intense backstory, it should come as no surprise that Spider-Man 2099 is a lot more serious than some of his Spider-Verse variants.

Ironically, his serious demeanor may serve to create all manner of hilarious moments, as he could serve as a comedic straight man to his less serious web-slinging compatriots.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is set to be released in June 2023, provided there are no further delays. Marvel and Spider-Man fans are undoubtedly psyched to see what Oscar Isaac will bring to the table. Given his already impressive resume, there is little doubt that he will make Spider-Man 2099 a compelling character. Let's just hope he can get along with the precious teen Miles Morales.
