The landscapes are ideally beautiful. The action, when it is present, is reasonably energetic. But the relaying of each is told in a juvenile ambience. It's not immature at all but heavily leaning towards empowering adolescent girls as the target audience. That in and of itself is no problem but it suffers at the expense of males and older women.

The atmosphere of the landscapes and the lore of the creatures are the most enthralling part of the story but it could be better enjoyed with different characters journeying through them as the males are more effeminate than the females while the females are ferocious and methodical. The one ferocious male comes off as a retired Santa Claus king. It's simply not believable or relatable that a 13-year-old princess (or prince) can best a werewolf where her soldier failed, or that she can kill a giant bear where her group of soldiers could not. The author presents this with an aura of self-importance and pride for the main character.

The air about seems to pit natural science over modern science, nature over society, spirit over education, magic over religion, etc. I've enjoyed stories that examine the contrasts and commonalities of such things, so it's not a turn-off but the journey through it all, once again, is done through the eyes of characters who see it all more black-and-white than is fair. The youth also take honor over the elders, where they are born with intuition and wisdom while the older ones seem to be inexperienced at life.

At 31% in, I couldn't enjoy the story anymore as the main character is arrogant and talks down to all around her while the author shows how she is a strong woman in a man's world. My last eyeroll before I gave up hope came with the self-projecting audacity coming from the princess, stating: "she was well aware that she was dealing with male pride here as much as loyalty and a sense of duty. Oskan was a boy who was standing on the threshold of manhood, and to leave a fourteen-year-old girl to fight while he rode away would be hard for him to bear."

From present goddesses to an absent Odin, to women drinking men under the table, to battle-axe weilding barronesses intimidating men, to an unmatched 14-year-old princess who somehow learned to fight better than seasoned veterans in the same kingdom, this story had a limited target audience and it isn't me, my wife, or my kids.

My child and I read this book together, and there were so many moments we hollered "Yay!" together it was astounding! He says it's the best book he ever read, and he usually only likes Wings if Fire. The AR level is 8.0 and it's appropriate for an 11 yr old boy. Max AR points is 24. Have a dictionary nearby for your kid as you read through it with them bc some words are challenging. This book was so good that we got the next 2 in the series AND donated it to our school's Library so that other kids can experience it. We are IN LOVE with this book! ❀️❀️❀️

This book it pretty great I bought it to replace my damaged copy. The icemark series is pretty epic.

I started reading them as a kid (23 now) and I was a bit slow and read them out of order, I read Blade of Fire first but even out of order the story is amazing. I love Thirrin and Oskan I just love the whole icemark and especially their Vampiric Majesties.

This series is literally for any age.

Cry Of The Icemark  I'm Irish/Scots descent and I read this book and then the series.Being Irish I found the concept of magicans (teenagers) then as husband and wife and ruler completely fascinating and tender. Then to add to the far out ideas you have snow lepards, Tree kings , werewolves and on and on. Stuart Hill like a true CELT has woven these facts and many more into a story which I could not put down. I have just purchased the triloghy for my daughter who has just had a son.I know she will love this trilogy and will in time read them to her son Liam just as we did to her with similiar stories.I wish Stuart would produce another book following the career of the son, the heir.

This is a great book and I love it. It is in excellent condition and was recieved earlier than expected. The only thing that took me by surprise was the cover. I really wanted the book with the cover picture shown, but I got the new edition with the new cover. Still a great book and great service, just a little disappointed.

I LOVE this book. I read my old copy so much it fell apart several times. After the last attempt to salvage it failed, I finally bought another one. The cover is different from the one pictured, but it actually works out well for me since it is the cover I wanted.

Great story, adventuring with a young lady as she grips with coming to age, ascending the throne, and defending her land under siege. I enjoy reading it over and over.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best book ever!

I **adore** the icemark series, I've re-read it countless times and it continues to stand out as my favourite book(s) of all time. Written as if real the characters will drag you into their world as if you were right there with them, comparatively I think this book is better than other famous series like Narnia and LOTR combined, the characters and events certainly feel more real especially the main character Thirrin (not sure if I spelled that correctly). It's been years since I've read it since but I remember so much! the friendships brought about, the deaths... there is nothing to fault this, nothing you cannot love.

I bought this one in particular as the artwork is extremely accurate to the description of the characters involved within it, especially in one of the first battles the main characters face. The cover is absolutely gorgeous with a style that seems as if it should be on a tapisty in someones castle.

5.0 out of 5 stars Werewolves, vampires, talking leopards

Reviewed in the United Kingdom πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§ on March 24, 2005

Loved it. So much happens in this book, I hardly know where to start. It has heroic warriors fighting epic battles against an evil empire. A young warrior queen on a quest for allies to save her kingdom. Warlocks and witches, vampires and werewolves... even huge talking snow leopards!

The entire world comes alive as you follow Thirrin Strong-in- the-arm Lindenshield, Wild Cat of the North on her journey from the Icemark in search of allies to fight the evil empire's invasion.

Don't wait for the paperback, by the hardcover now!

5.0 out of 5 stars In my top 100

I love this book such a shame there is no movie based on the ice mark chronicles as I'd be one to watch them excellent books and amazing stories to enjoy again and again

5.0 out of 5 stars An Underrated Gem

Reviewed in the United Kingdom πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§ on March 31, 2019

It's fantastic to see this under appreciated gem have a reissue. This coming of age war story has everyone one could hope for; epic battles, fantastical creatures, a fantastic icebound setting, a spunky teenage heroine and just a dash a subtle romance that is never overbearing. Now let's hope the superior sequel gets rereleased as well.

4.0 out of 5 stars Awesome read, yet again

I have read this book three times and it still grabs my attention and imagination. I'm no book expert, but this story, while not a masterpiece is still a refreshing read. The world and characters are interesting and have fun personalities. The only downside (if you can call it a downside) is that the story feels like it is for a slightly younger audience, but any fan of fantasy and war should enjoy this. And for the sake of a pointless rating I'll give it a solid 7/10.
