When attempting to update or restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, you may experience one of the following issues:

• Device continually restarts but never displays the Home screen.
• An update or restore did not complete and the device is no longer recognized in iTunes.
• Device stops responding; showing the Apple logo with no progress bar or a stopped progress bar, for over ten minutes.

To resolve this, place your device into recovery mode and try to restore the device again. For further instructions, follow the steps below:

NOTE: In some instances, an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch will automatically go into recovery mode after an update or a restore issue. If your device is already in recovery mode, you can try to restore it using iTunes.

Placing Your Device Into Recovery Mode

NOTE: The images used as examples are from iPhone.

STEP 1: Disconnect the USB cable from the iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch and leave the other end of the cable attached to the USB port of your computer.

STEP 2: Turn off your device by pressing the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the red slide to power off slider appears, then slide the slider from left to right. Wait for the device to turn off.

NOTE: If you cannot turn off the device, press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button simultaneously. Once the device turns off, release the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons.

STEP 3: Press and hold the Home button while reconnecting the USB cable back to the device. Your device should turn on at this point.

NOTE: If you see the image below after performing Step 3, allow the device to charge for at least ten minutes to make sure the battery has some charge, and then repeat Step 2.

STEP 4: Continue holding the Home button until you see the “Connect to iTunes” screen. When the image below appears, release the Home button.

NOTE: If you do not see the “Connect to iTunes” screen, repeat the above steps again.

STEP 5: If necessary, open iTunes. You should see the recovery mode alert below:

STEP 6: Use iTunes to restore your device. For further instructions, proceed to the steps below:

NOTE: If you see the “Connect to iTunes” screen but your device does not appear in iTunes, click here.

NOTE: Using the recovery mode will only allow you to restore the device. All user content on the device will be erased. However, if you have synced your device before using iTunes, you can restore from a previous backup.

Restoring Your iOS Device

Before restoring your device, perform the following:

• Make sure you are using the latest iTunes version. If not, download the latest iTunes here.

STEP 1: Connect your device to your computer.

STEP 2: Select your device once it appears in iTunes.

STEP 3: In the Summary tab, click the Restore button.

STEP 4: Click Restore to confirm.

STEP 5: Once the restore is complete, your device will restart. Slide the slide to set up, then follow the instructions in the iOS Setup Assistant.
