Install peel and stick tile over ceramic tile

Are you curious how a peel and stick vinyl floor will hold up? It’s the most asked question from my budget bathroom makeover. These self adhesive vinyl floor tiles are placed directly over the ceramic tiles and create a realistic modern update to any tile surface. In fact, they can be placed directly over linoleum, vinyl or even a wall.

Let’s recap what I’ve done in this inexpensive master bathroom makeover. First of all, from the moment we purchased our home 6 years ago, I’ve planned on a major renovation for this bathroom.

I’d like to rearrange the fixtures and make room for a soaker tub. However, that’s not been in the budget just yet. So, a mini makeover was in order, to spruce things up a bit. 

We updated the walls with paint, added decorative mirrors, raised and painted the vanity, covered the green grout with a grout pen and added self adhesive vinyl floor tiles.

Self Adhesive Vinyl Floor Tiles | One Year Later

Of course this self adhesive floor tile was never meant to be a permanent solution in my master bathroom.

It was to give my bathroom a mini makeover, without spending a lot of money until we do our major renovations.

Certainly, at a distance the floor looks terrific. The overall appearance looks like it did when we installed it in March of 2020.

However, upon closer inspection you can see a few mishaps we had.

My Floor Mishaps

I have a few tiles that have become damaged, which is no fault of the product itself. In fact, it’s all my fault! I brought in a ladder to dust my light fixtures, and unbeknownst to me the rubber protectors were missing on the legs of the ladder.

Clearly, sharp metal and vinyl don’t mix and I damaged a few tiles.

Despite this, I’ll share how I remedied the situation and my self adhesive floor tiles now look new again.

In addition, there have also had a few corners that have lifted. Upon further inspection I noticed that the vinyl tile was overlapping the tile a bit and the edge was on the grout.

These self adhesive floor tiles are intended for non-porous surfaces. That’s one of the warnings in the directions, to make sure that they do not cover the grout, or they may peel. So once again, operator error! 

However, I believe I came up with a good solution.

How I fixed My Mistakes

Well, it turns out that one drop of super glue was the trick. I simply pulled back the lifted corner and applied one drop of super glue and pressed the edge back down. 

Not only does it appear to be working, but it only took a few seconds to fix it.

As for the damaged tile, it would need to be replaced. 

I simply got online and ordered more tiles from Snazzydecals. While I was at it, I ordered extra tiles to change the ugly border tile in my shower too.

To remove the damaged tile, I used a plastic scraper to lift the corner of the tile. I used my Pampered Chef scraper.

It was a little more difficult than I anticipated, but I found that placing heat from the hair dryer on it for 10-15 seconds, softened the adhesive. 

Then I was able to lift it with the scraper.

Once the edge was lifted, I was able to pull the rest of the self adhesive floor tile off.

It left no sticky residue either. This is what makes this product a great choice for renters too.

Replace Damaged Tile

Once the damaged tile was removed. I was able to replace it with a new vinyl tile.

Would I Install Self Adhesive Floor Tiles Again?

And the big question is would I install these self adhesive vinyl floor tiles again? Absolutely! They totally transformed my bathroom with very little time and money. 

I do feel like the troubles that I did have were totally my fault. If I would have realized I was damaging the floor with the ladder, I would not have used it. But now I know! 

In fact, I still wanted to update the pink and green tile in my shower. Take a look at the transformation it made.
