Change makes a lot of people uncomfortable, especially when said change requires making adjustments to long-familiar behavior. When Apple decided to shake up the design formula on the iPhone X and later models, many users had to come to terms with a completely different procedure on how to shut down and restart their phones. Fortunately, the updated method isn't too difficult.

How to power off iPhone X

Here's the updated procedure on how to shut down and power off the iPhone X, XR, XS, or XS Max:

Press and hold the side button and one of the volume buttons. To avoid taking accidental screen shots, it may be best to get used to using the Volume Down button specifically.
When the screen changes, slide the top toggle to the right to shut down and power off the device.

There's also another method for shutting down iPhone X models that involves crawling through a couple of menu pages. This procedure is just as simple, though possibly not as straightforward.

From the home screen, navigate to Settings.
Tap on General.
Near the bottom of the page, tap Shut Down.
Slide the top toggle to the right to power off the device.

Part 1: Force Restart your iPhone XS (Max)

Whenever an iOS13 device seems to malfunction, this is the first thing that you should do. If you are lucky, then a simple force restart will fix the iPhone X black screen problem. If you see the Apple logo on the screen, then it means you have pressed the buttons for too long or too less. In this case, you need to start from the first step again.
Now, only let go of the Side (on/off) button, but keep holding the Volume Down button. Press the Volume Down button for the next 5 seconds.
In the end, the screen on your device would stay black. This means that you have entered your device in the DFU mode. In case if you get the connect-to-iTunes symbol on the screen, then you have made a mistake and would need to restart the process again.
As soon as iTunes would detect your phone in the DFU mode, it will display the following prompt and would ask you to restore your device. Simply confirm your choice and wait for a while as iTunes would restore your device.

In the end, your phone would be restarted with updated firmware. Needless to say, since your device is restored, all the existing data in it will be lost.

Part 5: Contact Apple Support to check if it's a hardware issue
