Q: I need a better phone than the cheap one Safelink gave me. I’m wondering if I can get a new phone that I really like and then pop the SIM card and into it instead?

A. You cannot do that because a SIM card becomes locked to a Tracfone phone (sister company of Safelink Wireless, where they get the phones) the moment the phone they sent you is powered up. After than, it becomes “unusable” in any other phone or with any other provider.

You can call Safelink and see what phones they have that you can upgrade to, but you’re probably going to have to shell out some money to get an upgrade.

SafeLink is the cellphone service provider, designed by the U.S. government for low-income families. These services can be accessed by filling out the enrolment forms on the official SafeLink website. These forms are analyzed and reviewed to check if you are eligible for the service. In addition, SafeLink allows the users to switch the SIM card from one phone to another, and service can be changed as well. In this article, we have added everything you need to transfer the number from SafeLink to other services!

Check With Wireless Provider

If you are shifting from SafeLink to other networks, you will obviously request the SIM card from a new service provider. Once you receive the SIM card through the mail, you need to call up the service provider and ask them for the access point names settings. These APN settings are entered that suits your mobile device. So, tell them the mobile phone model, and they will send out APN settings. In some cases, they will update the APN settings automatically.

Correct Information

Once you have installed the APN settings, but it didn’t activate the service, you need to follow this method. With this method, you need the correct account number and password for porting the number from SafeLink to other services. Once you enter the right information, you need to wait for 24 hours for deactivating the number with SafeLink. To tell you all, the account number is the IMEI number of the phone, and there is no need for a pin.

If you’ve activated the other SIM card, you need to set up the phone as well. So, we have outlined the steps that you need to follow;

• In the first step, remove the battery from your SafeLink wireless phone by sliding it down or taking off the cover
• Remove the SafeLink SIM card (it’s the white card which has the registration information pasted)
• Now, take the new SIM card and insert it into the SIM card slot (make sure the golden connections are downwards and are in connection with intricate wiring)
• Install the battery again and be accurate with the battery connection
• Put on the cover on the phone and switch on the phone
• That’s all! You can now use other network SIM card!

Prerequisites

Before you make up your mind to shift from SafeLink to some other network, you will need to clear the outstanding bills. In addition, if you’ve subscribed to the bundle, you can ask them to provide top-up or refund the charges (this might not be considered by SafeLink, but it is always worth a shot!). However, clearing the balance and paying outstanding amount is mandatory before you sign off from their service.
