Repaint w/ color change. What about VIN sticker in the door jam?

Hey there,

I approaching the paintwork on my '77 project car and a paint color change will be involved. I'm wondering what I should do about the VIN sticker on the drivers side door jam.

I've looked at many pictures of 911's over the years that have been repainted. Some tape over the VIN sticker and leave the sticker and a small area around it untouched with original paint. Others remove the sticker and paint the entire door jam.

I'm undecided about what I'm going to do.

Pros for leaving the sticker:
-Leaving the sticker is nice for originality, though my project car is far from original.
-One of the VIN spots on the car.

Cons for leaving the sticker:
-New paint (especially with a color change) looks much better without the sticker and a bit of original paint exposed.
-Possibly will allow the new paint edge to chip.

What do you guys think? Keep the sticker or remove it?

Thanks for the help!

As I read your post, originality is already out the window to the degree that the VIN sticker won't make a bit of difference. I'd say remove it, do a quality repaint, and check up on the Porsche reissues if you truly want to have a sticker.

At times I encounter the same situation. On the cars that I want to keep the sticker I'll mask the it off and paint right up to it with my basecoat. Then I'll unmask it and clear right over it. This way you don't have that ugly rough edge around it or a mismatch of the color around it.

if a plate then drill out the rivits

if a stuck on sticker then mask well - press down - use caulk at tape edge - then wipe off excess

spend time spent with magnifier, sharp blade and thin brush up to limit of your sanity

Scott- on one of my other cars, when the left side got hit and new pieces had to be welded in, the body shop was able to lift my old VIN sticker off and reapply it to the freshly painted new door jam. The work was so darn good that it's almost impossible to tell it isn't original.

When I did my repaint I went to PCNA for a new sticker and they are NLA for older cars mine is a 76 I got one from a fellow pelican with instructions do a search I cant recall his name right now I have not found a punch that will work for the vin though there was a debate and most agree that it is not a true vin location but a emissions sticker or some such thing, if you get his which look pretty dang good and a punch to do the vin please let me know.

Rob, I received my sticker and I must say it looks awesome. The problem is that I cant find a good picture of an original one (1970) so I can make mine correctly. does anyone have an actual picture of one? I did try to search but no luck. Thanks!

I just when through this on my old Datsun Z. I took some time to carefully make a perfect covering surface with masking tape when I just did a repaint on my Z.

Removing the stickers to me was NOT an option or even consideration. The Datsun stickers are cool as well due to the Japanese \ Kanji writing on them and also French, so I was going to preserve them no matter what.

I would do the same on my Porsche as well.
