How to remove double sided carpet tape from wood floor

The tape was double-sided mesh carpet tape. It has been under a runner in an entryway for about 20 years and is now just a dried mesh and whatever residue is left from the glue that was on the tape. Can anyone suggest a method of removing the tape without doing damage to the floor? Thanks!

A plastic putty knife can often remove residue if it isn't too sticky. In a pinch, an old plastic credit card can also work. If the surface finish is weak, it may lift with the residue.

Soaking the tape in WD-40 may be able to dissolve the glue and make it easier to remove. You may have to leave it for a few hours to soak in considering the age of the material.

Some homeowners may choose to use double-sided tape to hold the corners of an area rug firmly to their laminate flooring. While this works to prevent accidental trips and falls, the tape can be difficult to remove from the flooring when it's time to replace the rug. Fortunately, there are a few different removal methods you can try. The important thing is that you take your time and use extra care not to damage your flooring.

Things You Will Need

  • Hair dryer or heat gun

  • Credit card or plastic scraper

  • Rubber gloves

  • Rag

  • Water

  • WD-40

  • Rubbing alcohol

  • Goo Gone

  • Nonstick cooking spray

  • White distilled vinegar

  • Pencil eraser

  • Melamine foam sponge

  • Dish detergent

  • Mop

  • Lint-free towel

Use the Power of Heat

When you apply heat to double-sided tape, it will loosen the adhesive. Grab a hair dryer or heat gun and place it on the low-heat setting. Move the heat back and forth over the strip of tape for several minutes. How To Clean Stuff.net recommends using a credit card or plastic scraper to remove the tape. As soon as the adhesive softens and loosens, start scraping the tape. Once you lift up one side of the tape, you can grab the tape and pull as you scrape. Continue until the entire piece of tape has been removed.

Hot water is another option if you don't have a hair dryer on hand. Put on a pair of rubber gloves and soak a rag in some hot water. Set the rag over the double-sided tape. After a few minutes, lift up the rag and begin scraping the tape off the flooring as you would for the hair dryer.

Use an Adhesive Remover

Two types of adhesive removers are required to fully remove double-sided tape from laminate flooring. The first works to assist you in getting the tape up, and the second addresses the sticky residue that remains on the floor once the tape has been removed.

Review your pantry and cleaning supply cabinet to see which of the well-known adhesive removers you have on hand. Remove and Replace suggests using either WD-40, rubbing alcohol, Goo Gone, nonstick cooking spray or white distilled vinegar. Pour one of these substances over the double-sided tape and wait for it to saturate the tape and weaken the adhesive. Use a credit card or plastic scraper to lift the tape off the floor.

Grab a pencil eraser or a melamine foam sponge and move it back and forth across any sticky residue that's still on the surface of the floor. Another option is to use duct tape. Place a small piece of duct tape over the residue and pull upward. The tape will grab any remaining residue off the laminate.

Clean the Flooring

Now that you have the tape and sticky residue off the laminate, you'll need to clean the floors. Home Depot recommends creating a cleaning solution using a teaspoon of unscented clear dish soap and a gallon of hot water. The home improvement store also warns not to allow this solution to stand on the floor, as water can damage laminate flooring. After you mop the floors with the cleaning solution, go back over the floors with a dry, lint-free towel.

Upgraded Home also suggests giving your laminate flooring a good cleaning before you apply a new piece of double-sided tape. This step helps prevent the adhesive from leaving behind any sticky residue when you need to remove the tape in the future.

Warning

While many sites suggest using nail polish remover to get adhesive off of various surfaces, you shouldn't use it on laminate flooring. The acetone used to create the nail polish remover can stain the laminate.

Does double

Hardwood floors are delicate, and most rug tapes can ruin them — a nightmare for any homeowner. The adhesive in the carpet tape easily reacts with wood flooring and wood floor finishes that's exposed to the sun or heat. That reaction loosens the grip and leaves discolored stains that damage the hardwood floors.

How do you get carpet adhesive off of wood?

For carpet glue that is tar-based, you should use a tar remover with mineral spirits. For all other types of carpet glue, an orange oil solvent should suffice. Apply the solvent and give it time to work on the glue. When the glue has been sufficiently loosened, you can pry the remainder away using your putty knife.
