That’s all you have to do to quickly and easily respond to a voicemail message on your iPhone. Next, we’ll give you a little more information about the controls for traditional voicemail service on various carriers.

Traditional voicemail on iPhone

Here is a chart explaining some of the basic controls of a traditional voicemail inbox on a variety of carriers based in the U.S. and Canada.

Verizon Press 9 Press 7 Press 4
AT&T Press 3 Press 2 Press 1

Bell Press 9 Press 7 Press 4
Telus Press 9 Press 7 Press 1
Virgin Mobile Press 3 Press 2 Press 1

Those are the controls for voicemail service of various popular carriers in the U.S. and Canada. There are, however, a couple of other things you should know about voicemail on iOS that you should keep in mind when checking and responding to messages, so we’ll cover those things now.

Notes on checking voicemail messages

1. If you don’t delete it from your inbox, a voicemail will be automatically erased after a period of time.

Even if you don’t erase it from your inbox, unless you save a voicemail message it will be automatically deleted after a certain amount of time. Most mobile service providers leave voicemail messages in your inbox for 30 days, but this time period can vary from one provider to another. Check with your service provider to see how long your messages can be kept.

2. You need caller ID to be able to use the “Call Back” feature.

If you don’t have caller ID as part of your monthly phone plan, you likely will not be able to see the phone numbers of people leaving you voicemail messages, and as such you will not be able to tap the Call Back button. This feature only works when the caller’s phone number is visible.

3. If you have a traditional voicemail service, call in to listen to your messages.

Though we included a table above with basic controls for various traditional voicemail services, we thought we should clarify this: If you don’t have visual voicemail included in your phone plan, you won’t see a list of your messages when you select the Voicemail tab on the Phone app. Instead, when you tap the Voicemail icon, you will see that your phone is dialing your voicemail inbox. From there, you’ll be able to listen to any messages you have. Follow the instructions for your specific carrier when the command options are presented to you by the automated greeting.
