That's how I still check trans fluid. Make sure you're on a flat surface as well.

I check it the way the manual tells me to, but if it isn't leaking, I'm not checking!

My G8 doesn't even have a dipstick.

Sure its not in the trunk, lol. I only say because a buddy has one and his battery is there because they ran out of room under the hood with that LS2 motor.

Engine and trans warm, idling in neutral after you've run it through all the gears.

Instructions are printed on the dipstick hehe

Gentlemen, you have to check it with the engine running.
Why?
Because the pump in your tranny has to be pumping the torque converter full of oil to get an accurate reading on the dipstick.
Check it when the engine is off and you will see that it's overfull.

Here is the page from the OM.
You can download the OM from the ramtrucks(dot)com website. Bottom of page under "owners" there is a link to owner and service manuals.

From 2010 owners manual

Fluid Level Check
If equipped with a dipstick, use the following procedure.
If your vehicle has a capped dipstick tube, it is sealed and
should not be tampered with. Your authorized dealer has
the proper tools to ensure that the fluid level is set
properly. The fluid level should be checked when the
engine is fully warmed up and the fluid in the transmission
is at normal operating temperature. Operation of the
transmission with an improper fluid level will greatly
reduce the life of the transmission and of the fluid. Check
the fluid level whenever the vehicle is serviced.
Fluid Level Check – 42RLE/545RFE
Check the fluid level while the transmission is at normal
operating temperature 82°C (180°F). This occurs after at
least 15 miles (25 km) of driving. At normal operating
temperature the fluid cannot be held comfortably between
the fingertips.
To check the automatic transmission fluid level properly,
the following procedure must be used:
1. Operate the engine at idle speed and normal operating
temperature
2. The vehicle must be on level ground.
3. Fully apply the parking brake and press the brake
pedal.
4. Place the shift lever momentarily into each gear position
ending with the lever in PARK.
5. Remove the dipstick, wipe it clean and reinsert it until
seated.
6. Remove the dipstick again and note the fluid level on
both sides. The fluid level should be between the “HOT”
(upper) reference holes on the dipstick at normal operating
temperature. Verify that solid coating of oil is seen on
both sides of the dipstick. If the fluid is low, add as
required into the dipstick tube. Do not overfill. After
adding any quantity of oil through the oil fill tube, wait
a minimum of two minutes for the oil to fully drain into
the transmission before rechecking the fluid level.

NOTE: If it is necessary to check the transmission below
the operating temperature, the fluid level should be
between the two “COLD” (lower) holes on the dipstick
with the fluid at approximately 70°F (21°C) (room temperature).
If the fluid level is correctly established at
room temperature, it should be between the “HOT”
(upper) reference holes when the transmission reaches
180°F (82°C). Remember it is best to check the level at the
normal operating temperature.

CAUTION!
Be aware that if the fluid temperature is below 50°F
(10°C) it may not register on the dipstick. Do not add
fluid until the temperature is elevated enough to
produce an accurate reading.

Manual says 120,000 for regular or 60,000 miles for severe service. I like to do it at 60,000 miles in all my vehicles regardless

Yeah, what Richard66 said, or more simply put, when the transmission is warm and the truck is level.

Do you check transmission fluid while truck is running?

Transmission fluid expands in heat and in order to receive accurate results, it must be under normal operating conditions. If the fluid is checked when the engine is cold, you may get false results indicating the fluid is low. Allow the engine to continue running while you check the level.

Does Ram 1500 have transmission dipstick?

Our research indicates that your vehicle does not have a transmission fluid dipstick. These types of transmissions are designed to be maintenance free. In order to check the transmission fluid, your vehicle likely has check valve on the bottom of the transmission on the bottom of your car.
