How to answer do you have any other offers

Tough Interview Question - Are you interviewing with other employers? Which ones?

Are you interviewing with other employers? Which ones?

Similar interview questions:
Do you have any other interviews pending?
Have you received any offers yet?
What other employers are you currently considering?
How do we compare against other employers you are considering?

Why the interviewer is asking this question:
This is a buy question. Interviewers simply do not ask this question unless they are interested in the candidate. It can come across as a rather bold question, especially asking you to name names, but the purpose of it for the interviewer is simple: we’re interested and we want to know with whom we are competing. It also helps the interviewer understand the timing of when a potential offer would need to be made.

The best approach to answering this question:
You have two choices with this question: 1) you can answer generally about the “type” of employers you are interviewing with (in which case the interviewer may still press you for specific names); or 2) you can answer specifically and name names. My recommendation is to do the latter, since doing so will further build your competitive positioning for a potential offer. However, you could be interviewing exclusively with this one employer (which is often the case for experienced candidates who are directly recruited for a specific role). If that’s the case, say so.

An example of how to best answer this question for experienced candidates:
"I am presently interviewing with two other employers, both of whom you likely know fairly well: _____ and _____. Although I am early cycle with all three employers, they each have interesting options to consider. In the end, it will come down to who makes the best offer, best fit for the role and the opportunities for future growth…"

An example of how to best answer this question for entry level candidates:
"I do still have several employers pending, including _____ and ____ [name your top two employer prospects]. Although it’s still early cycle for consideration, from what I have seen so far, your company compares well against the others that I am considering…"

An example of how you should not answer this question:
"You have no right to ask that question. Who I am interviewing with is my business, not yours. I didn’t ask you if you were interviewing other candidates and who they are, did I?"

Remember to answer each interview question behaviorally, whether it is a behavioral question or not. The easiest way to do this is to use an example from your background and experience. Then use the S-T-A-R approach to make the answer a STAR: talk about a Situation or Task (S-T), the Action you took (A) and the Results achieved (R). This is what makes your interview answer uniquely yours and will make your answer a star!

Do you have any other offer at hand?

This is usually a closing question and they might want to know how actively you are looking for a job. Usually give an honest answer and say why you are looking for another job with that offer at hand.

  • This question can be very intimidating. You might want to answer in affirmative to give them an impression that you are being sought by other companies as well but fear that it would lessen your chances since they know you have other choices. You might want to answer in negative but that would make you appear as someone who hasn't much option and would desperately take up their offer even with a lesser salary. This question can really confuse you if you aren't prepared for it in advance.

If you do have offers awaiting your confirmation, you can tell them so but might want to keep the names confidential until you have decided where you want to be. If you are answering in affirmative, do remember to mention that you find the offer good but the position and work does not interest you as much as the one for which you are interviewing currently. You can add that since you find their position more interesting and in accordance to your qualification, there you are at the moment, sitting for the interview.

If you do not have any offer waiting, you can say so without any hesitation and also mention that you were at an early stage of job search when you came across their opening and since you found it suitable to you, you haven't paid much heed to apply to other places

How do you answer do you have any offers in hand?

I'm really happy to be under deliberation for your role and look forward to the final steps and preferably receiving an offer. I wanted to inform you that I'm also interviewing with another company and have received an offer from them.

What do you say in an interview when you have other offers?

I wanted to let you know that I'm also in the process of interviewing with other companies and recently received an offer for a similar role. However, I am still very interested in this job because I believe I could contribute more to your business's goals.

Why do companies ask if you have other offers?

Asking whether you're interviewing with other companies allows an interviewer to learn whether you're a competitive candidate with other job options currently available.

Should you say you have another offer?

Yes. You should definitely tell a company that you just received an offer from another employer. This can work to your advantage in two ways: First of all, it could potentially expedite the process at this current company.
