Dexron vi transmission fluid advance auto parts

I just found out that the automatic transmission fluid that I ordered (12 quarts) from advance auto parts was not what was sent to mechanics shop. I ordered dexron 3 and they sent dexron 6. When I confronted the manager I was told it is far better than the dexron 3. I found out when I went in to get the parking brake tightened up or see if pads are worn. The owner of the shop said that he thought we decided to go with dexron 3 because that is what the shop manual calls for and being a high mileage vehicle, about 148,600 miles we should probably stay with the 3. My receipt from advance shows dexron 3 but the empty bottles are Castrol dexron 6 and advance refuses to do anything and I should be thanking them for the upgrade.

Should I have the fluid changed or leave it as is.

As always all ideas, thoughts, or personal experiences greatly appreciated.

Richard.

I would use Dex 6. It is a synthetic and GM says it can be used with any Hydramatic transmission back to 1949. It has replaced older Dexrons.

All Dexron-III licenses expired permanently at the end of 2006, and GM now supports only Dexron-VI fluids for use in their automatic transmissions. Dextron VI has a slightly lower viscosity to avoid parasitic drag and improve gas mileage. I wouldn't be upset with the change, I think you made out pretty good!

agree that the DexVI is good stuff and should cause no problems.

what i "don't like" is that Advance would change your order without notifying you prior to doing so!

Thanks everyone, I will leave it as is. The 2 to 3 shift has not caused a shudder yet and it may be my imagination but it does seem to shift quicker and smoother no matter of how slow or fast I am accelerating. I did one full throttle run to shift through the gears and it up shifted just before red line. I think that is hard on an engine with 148,000 plus miles and has never been opened. I drive it to keep up with traffic unless I am the first car at the red light. Something left over from my teenage years.

What transmission fluid is the same as DEXRON VI?

Valvoline Dexron VI/Mercon LV ATF is the full-synthetic automatic transmission fluid that has been uniquely engineered to meet and exceed the requirements of the General Motors Dexron VI specification and is officially licensed and approved by GM.

What is compatible with DEXRON VI?

GM considers Dexron VI to be "backward compatible," meaning GM recommends it for use in any vehicle that originally used any earlier version of Dexron and that it can be mixed with them. However, GM specifically recommends against using Dexron VI in non-GM made vehicles that used Dexron III as original equipment.

Can you mix DEXRON VI with ATF?

MaxLife® ATF, ATF +4 and DEXRON® VI are all synthetic transmission fluids. Is it OK to mix synthetic ATF with a conventional and/or synthetic blend ATF? Yes. Synthetic ATF and conventional fluids are 100 percent compatible with each other.

What color is DEXRON VI fluid?
