Prepare your shampoo solution

You may use laundry detergent liquid as the shampoo solution. This is because the stains on the carpet surfaces are similar to those on the clothes. Hence a good laundry detergent liquid is also good for carpet cleaning applications.

Prepare your carpet cleaner

Fill up the clean water tank with your shampoo solution and make sure the dirt water tank is empty.

On the right side of the machine there are three cleaning modes: (a) Max, (b) Deep, and (c) Express. It simply means the amount of water to be sprayed. Choose the “Deep” cleaning mode for a good start. Go to “Max” if you think more water is required but note that this will empty your shampoo solution faster and you need to spend more time to remove the shampoo material from the carpet.

Next, close up the “hose lid” until you hear a “click”. This is to prevent air gap which weakens the vacuum suction.

Picture: The “hose lid” must be closed up tightly to prevent vacuum leakage. This is also the place where the upholstery hand tool will be attached.

Step 1 – Shampoo wash your carpet

Do the following to kick start the machine:

  1. Press the “release switch” on the lower part of the machine so you may now turn the machine from its originally upright position into a tilt position for cleaning operation.
  2. Press the “power switch” to turn on the vacuum suction and rotating brush.
  3. Press the “hand trigger” all the time to continuously spay the shampoo solution.

Now the carpet cleaner is doing three actions at the same time – (1) brushing of carpet surface, (2) spraying of shampoo solution, and (3) extraction of dirt water. You will need to move the carpet cleaner forward and backward at least three passes (forward x 3, backward x 3) over the entire carpet area. This will complete the shampoo wash step.

Note: You may touch the carpet surface and verify that it is soapy which means the shampoo material has been thoroughly applied.

Case Study: a 180cm x 120cm low-pile carpet

In the following video we show that for a 180cm x 120cm low-pile carpet, in the “deep” cleaning mode, a three-passes shampoo wash typically uses up 2.5 liter of shampoo solution.

Step 2 – Rinse your carpet

This time round, use only water for rinsing. The main idea is to remove any shampoo residues using water. Similarly, do the three actions simultaneously – (1) brushing of carpet surface, (2) spraying of clean water, and (3) extraction of dirt water. Run at least 3 passes (forward x 3, backward x 3) over the entire carpet area.

Note: As a check, touch the carpet surface and you should feel that it is no longer soapy. Otherwise, do more rinsing passes until the carpet surface is no longer soapy. This completes the rinsing process.

Step 3 – Dry your carpet

Spraying is no longer required. Instead, try to extract water from the carpet surface with the always-on vacuum suction. Keep doing this until no significant water flow is seen in the suction nozzle.

Post-cleaning Steps

After the cleaning steps with the Bissell ProHeat 2X Revolution, the carpet will still be lightly wet. This is normal. To speed up the drying process, the preferred solution is to hang the carpet under the sun. If indoor drying is the only choice, switch on ceiling fan and open the surrounding windows so high air flow can be sustained. You may also want to rent a blower for indoor drying of carpet.

Do you have to rinse carpet after using Bissell carpet cleaner?

Step 5: Rinse Your Carpets (Optional) An optional step that we recommend if you have time is to go back over the cleaned carpet again with only hot tap water in the tank (no formula this time). This will remove any leftover formula and give your carpets an extra clean.
