SD card for A7C, is V90 overkill? + spring 2021 pictures

I ordered Sony TOUGH-G series SDXC UHS-II Card with minimum video speed of V90 and Max R300MB/S, W299MB/S. Somebody in my local store said my camera doesn't need this because it is only 10 frames per second and is not 8K. Is he correct?

I hate just talking about equipment without posting pictures, so this is my latest non professional, enthusiast spring pictures. please comment to make me to take better photos. I was trying to make the water whiter by lowering the shutter speed but couldn't do it for the red bridge because the wind made the leaves blurry.

So maybe a little overkill?  I just got a couple of the fast Delkins to go with a new A7Riv.  I don't expect lots of big bursts, yet, perhaps when I get a long lens of some sort and go for more speedy subjects.  But I was also thinking of transfer time for the big files might benefit, too.  I'll know better when I get out and take some pictures.

A little aside, I've seen Descanso looking better this time of year. But the weather/rain situation has been pretty grim, too.  I'm supposed to pick up another lens tomorrow and was thinking of trying to get a reservation and go to Descanso but not sure when I'd get the lens or the reservation.

You are right, It was obvious that they are conserving water because some streams were dry but Tulip and Lilac sections were still nice to celebrate the better spring of 2021.

My A7c specs: Video: 4k30p 8-bit 4:2:0 100Mbps. Does this mean V90 is appropriate and V60 recommended by my store worker is slow for 100Mbps?

Should use the V60, more bang for buck, the A7C write speed isn't gonna increase because you used the V90.

On the first image, F16 is a little bit overkill and by 1/4sec you have to keep your hands still. You have now adjusted the light that the camera see to 0.7EV you can turn that up a little more.

On the second image, the focus seems on the left corner and not on the duck if that was your intenton.

The third image, f14 is a bit high for a picture like this. And in combination with iso50 it makes again 1/5sec, to compensate that you can turn up the iso so you have less rapidly a blured picture.

Checking the reference, it doesn't seem like the video would force you to the higher speeds.  But I don't do hardly any video so can't compare to an actual use pattern.  More like taking multiple image bursts.  If you shoot slowly, not in long or lots of multi-shot bursts, then slower might be fine.  If you find you're filling a card and need to have more on hand between download sessions, maybe try a less expensive card the next time.

As to the getting the silky water from a long exposure, the same longer shutter speed "motion" that blurs or makes the water silky also "blurs" the leaf movement.  You want higher speeds to stop motion in part of the image and slower speeds for blur in others and that may require some thought as to how to get that..

I use v60 cards without issue.  But unless cost is a concern don't worry about it.  You won't need to buy new cards when the new tech comes out.  Otherwise v60 is fine.

While the V90 cards are overkill for the A7C, I'd argue your card will survive until your next camera, or you might rent a A1 once and then you'll love it. Also: in a good card reader offloading to your computer will be faster, adds to quality of life, at least for me, I am impatient

I dunno where write speeds top out with the A7C, but on an A7R IV and other recent Sony bodies they would max out at like near 200MB/s with TotL cards like the SF-G and below that with slower cards even if they were rated for 150-200MB/s vs the SF-G's 300MB/s (there's always substantial overhead, photos aren't a 100% sequential transfer which is what those max ratings represent, etc.).

Given that even compressed RAWs are like 24MB on that body, 10fps is easily more than 200MB/s, so my guess is faster cards will still make a difference for buffer clear times although perhaps not as drastic a difference as on an A7R with 40-60MB RAWs. Dude at the store is right in that you don't need a V90 card for 4K video at the A7C's bitrates tho, V60 would suffice.

Faster cards will still read faster on a decent reader, but if you don't care about that or about buffer clearing times too much, then you can get away with cheaper cards at like 1/2 the price. The ProGrade V90 cards are pretty good too and have been cheaper lately than SanDisk's or Sony's best, I'm using one of those alongside an SF-G (both 128GB).

OP was asking about an A7C tho... I specifically mentioned that with the bitrate of his camera V60 wouldn't be an issue, the A73S has far higher bitrates available.

Even if you don’t use the speed of the card in this camera, you’ll be able to download the images from the card really quickly. Moreover, you might be using a faster camera next time.

With v90, you’ll clear your buffer faster, if that matters to you, then get it, otherwise a V30 is enough to handle anything the camera can throw at you.

Here you can see the A7c has a write speed of around 180MB/s which is actually faster than the A7III. So you know what card to buy.

V30/V60/V90 is a notation for video. V30=30MB/s is the minimum speed the camera can sustain for a longer period. The A7c has a bitrate of 100Mb/s which is 12.5MB/s. So a V30 card is more than enough for 4K video.
