camshaft actuators they have O-rings on them and like to leak, if you have remaining powertrain warranty they are covered. I've done a lot of them.

Thank you! I have been literally unable to identify these just surfing the net. It is covered and i'll probably take it in. I'm definitely getting the impression that theres a possibilty of falling up the timing if i do something wrong. I like to do my own work if at all possible but I won't risk messing anything up if I'm less than sure i can handle the repair. Don't suppose you'd know the part number for the orings off the top of your head?

Nah I generally don't have anything to do with part numbers, and they aren't hard to change at all but if its under warranty in my eyes you may as well take it in. Let a tech get an easy repair for once and if anything else comes out of it its documented in GM system. Cruzes seem to be very buggy or awesome little cars just depends on what you drew out of the hat ha.

Chevrolet Cruze owners have reported 30 problems related to engine oil leaking (under the engine and engine cooling category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Chevrolet Cruze based on all problems reported for the Cruze.

1 Engine Oil Leaking problem of the 2012 Chevrolet Cruze

Failure Date: 04/22/2021

Check engine light came on and car was leaked oil onto the driveway, when car was parked. The next day, car was taken in to be serviced. "upon vehicle inspection, technician(tech) found, oil filter adapter leaking oil. " "need gasket to block. "resealed oil cooler and oil filter adapter seals. " "tech also found valve cover leaking. Replace cover leaking oil. Replaced valve cover. Tech found trans oil cooler lines both leaking lines- replaced. Customer states check engine light is on. Replaced purge valve. Tech found battery negative cable high resistance. Replaced negative battery cable. After 8 days without her car and after paying for the aforementioned services, when the car was parked in the driveway, it continued to leak oil! tech informed her that it was a new problem and that she would have to pay an extra $700! the fact the tech had the audacity to think it was ok to say that to her or anyone else, is appalling, to say the least. I'm sure someone has had a similar problem with this make nd model.

2 Engine Oil Leaking problem of the 2016 Chevrolet Cruze

Failure Date: 04/01/2021

4 Engine Oil Leaking problem of the 2011 Chevrolet Cruze

Failure Date: 02/06/2021

5 Engine Oil Leaking problem of the 2012 Chevrolet Cruze

Failure Date: 01/07/2021

My car has been fitting the description of a specific recall on the same year and model. (I. E. : recall #12v288000 - date: 6/22/2012 - component engine and engine cooling) I purchased my car through carmax less than a year ago and have had multiple issues including, airbag senor problems, rmp issues, alternator replacement, etc. I've dealt with an oil leak from the valve cover most recently. I took it in for an oil change and found out there was a leak which was so bad it saturated everything in the engine area collecting near the engine and exhaust system. This lead to an awful burning smell. The valve cover was replaced and now two weeks later there is still an awful burning smell coming from both inside and outside the car. The valve cover doesn't seem to be leaking oil, and I don't see any weird objects or debris in the engine area. The recall previously mentioned fits my current problem to a t - but according to my VIN there have been 0 recalls. The car is not dependable at this point due to risk of fume inhalation and potential fire. It has been in the shop multiple times since I bought it and I have barely put 6,000 miles on it since purchase.

6 Engine Oil Leaking problem of the 2016 Chevrolet Cruze

Failure Date: 01/04/2021

Before leaving work, I turned on my car for about ten minutes to warm up. When I entered the car to leave work, I was overcome with the smell of what I thought was gasoline. I drove like normal on my way home, rolling the window down to get rid of the smell, and I also thought some smoke or haze may have entered my car, although it was dark and foggy so I cannot be sure. While driving on the highway, my car's (2016 chevy Cruze) oil light came on. It gave me an urgent message of "low oil pressure- stop engine" and beeped continuously, while a thick smell of oil filled the car. I am very lucky that I was near an exit and I pulled off immediately into a grocery store parking lot. The car had to be towed and later that week, I learned that my car had leaked 3. 3 quarts of oil, leaving me with 1. 25 quarts. The mechanic told me that I was lucky I pulled off when I did, and that there was a serious risk of engine damage. He also let me know that another car, same make and model, was also in the shop with the same exact problem, and that that car's engine had to be replaced. I quote from my $500+ invoice, "the turbo oil feed pipe was leaking at the oil cooler due to poor sealing. Vehicle was 3. 3 quarts low on fluid. ".

7 Engine Oil Leaking problem of the 2012 Chevrolet Cruze

Failure Date: 10/15/2020

Oil is running from a cast nut that holds an alternator bracket to the engine block and with the car going down the road at highway speeds there' a strong possibility that oil coming from this cast nut that cant hold the bracket stable is letting the pressure of the oil to run out and possibly come in contact with the internal workings of the alternator and short it out with the possibility of a fire starting and causing other problems under the hood plus the chance of destroying the engine if the leak of the oil pressure pushes that end of the bracket out of the engine block and the oil will come out like water coming out of a water hose. What is happening now every time I drive the car and stop it leaves oil all over different parts of the engine compartment and the oil leaves a big puddle on my garage floor and I end up having to crawl under the car to clean excess oil off the engine and the garage floor on a regular basis. You tube is showing that several different people have this problem the bracket is pushing out due the fact that the cast nut is breaking down due to the heat and in turn oil starts running all over the top side of the motor and into different areas of the engine compartment. It might really give you a better ideal of this problem if you look on you tube concerning oil leak problems with the Chevrolet Cruze 1. 4l engine starting in 2012 and it started on approx. 10-15-2020 and continues to happen according to how far I drive and how long the engine is at operating temperature. If I can help you to help me and a lot of other people that are having this problem . Thanks for your time and I hope this can be taken care for the safety aspect! thanks again I really appreciate your help.

8 Engine Oil Leaking problem of the 2016 Chevrolet Cruze

Failure Date: 06/10/2020

My valve cover has went bad and started leaking oil around my spark plugs. Upon further investigation of my own I have found out that this is a common issue for many year models of the chevy Cruze. My valve cover is an updated version of the plastic on the 2015 and older and is now a metal one. I spoke with a local mechanic who informed me he has replaced 75 new valve covers that general motors has built a new valve cover to replace the metal one on my car. Also this metal valve cover has caused my car to start smoking heavily when I drove it to make me have to have my car towed home until I can get the issue fixed.

9 Engine Oil Leaking problem of the 2011 Chevrolet Cruze

Failure Date: 04/22/2020

My vehicle was recalled for the valve cover gasket which may leak oil and drop down causing a fire. I was told by the dealership that this was fixed upon taken it to a mechanic because the oil was dripping down causing smoke and the part that it was dripping on was red hot which was the coil wire. Was in fact not fixed.

10 Engine Oil Leaking problem of the 2011 Chevrolet Cruze

Failure Date: 04/01/2020

Tl the contact owns a 2011 Chevrolet Cruze. The contact stated that while her son was driving approximately 45 mph, attempting to slow down the brakes began to lock. There was smoke coming from the dashboard of the vehicle. The driver pulled over and was able to stop the vehicle by applying excessive pressure to the brake pedal. The driver and the passenger of the vehicle were able to get out of the vehicle by kicking the doors to force them to open. Once the passenger was able to get out of the vehicle the passenger side of the vehicle was engulfed in flames. The fire department was called and extinguished the fire. A fire department report was filed. The vehicle was towed and deemed totaled. There were no injuries and no medical attention was needed. The contact spoke with fort Dodge Ford Toyota Lincoln (2723 5th Ave s, fort Dodge, IA 50501 phone: (515) 576-7505) who informed the contact of a recall for the brakes and low oil leaking causing a fire. The vehicle's VIN was included in NHTSA campaign number: 13v36000 (service brakes, hydraulics) however, the vehicle was never repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage 188,000.

11 Engine Oil Leaking problem of the 2012 Chevrolet Cruze

Failure Date: 03/10/2020

My engine is leaking oil and my transmission is slipping. After I filled up the gas tank one day the car jerked and the engine light never went off. I'm not sure why there isn't a recall on it when apparently these cars are notorious for these issues. Jack maxton told me some gear broke inside my transmission.

12 Engine Oil Leaking problem of the 2011 Chevrolet Cruze

Failure Date: 02/08/2020

There is a bad oil leak on the car that I wasn't informed of and the oil plug has been stripped out and there is oil all under the motor and you can smell it when parked and it's starting to come through the vents on the inside of the car.

13 Engine Oil Leaking problem of the 2012 Chevrolet Cruze

Failure Date: 01/20/2020

The oil cooler seal leaks, and drops oil on the exhaust. This gives off smoke, and is a fire hazard. Also the fumes from the dripping oil is sucked into the cabin air intake, and contaminates the air in the cabin.

14 Engine Oil Leaking problem of the 2012 Chevrolet Cruze

Failure Date: 01/09/2020

I purchased a car on December 19th 2019 I put $4,000 down on a 2012 chevy Cruze from a from a used car lot here in daytona beach florida I cannot get my oil change the screw that lets the oil out of the oil pan has been stripped and I was unable to get the oil changed because in order to do that they would have to break it and spot welding would need to be done also every time I shut my car off and go to turn it back on I have to get a jump my car battery loses its energy or whatever you want to call it so it loses power my battery the battery is 5 years old also my rotors are brand-new but my brake pads are bad and they would not when I say they I mean autoventure in holly hill florida where I bought the car will not give me a carfax instead they gave me another thing that's like carfax and it says that my car is full is and there's nothing wrong with it when indeed the motor itself is from a junkyard and they did not deny that so this is within the first three weeks of me having the car and I'm already seeing this many problems. Also I have an oil leak I was told to purchase a a cover to where you put the oil in the car cuz the cover might be old and it still might not be as good so I went to chevy dealership and purchase it for $28 only to find out that valve cover gasket also needs to be replaced so my car is leaking oil the oil change place where I've been taking my car's the last 6 years would not touch my car and give me an oil change due to the fact that the bolt at the bottom of the oil pan has been stripped so not only is my oil at 6% but now I can't get my oil changed because of it.

15 Engine Oil Leaking problem of the 2013 Chevrolet Cruze

Failure Date: 11/13/2019

I have had an issue with the valve cover gasket needing to be replace due to oil leakage twice within a year. I will start noticing burt oil smell only on the inside of the car through the air vents. There havnt been any leakage on the ground as far as I see. This can't possibly be normal. I currently have to put my car in the shop for this issue.

16 Engine Oil Leaking problem of the 2011 Chevrolet Cruze

Failure Date: 08/20/2019

It leaks motor oil everytime it gets changed, theres always a huge pile of oil on the ground, I can also move the gear shift without needing to press the brake pedal . Overall its been a hassel to deal with it.

17 Engine Oil Leaking problem of the 2012 Chevrolet Cruze

Failure Date: 12/11/2018

The valve cover is shit! I've replaced three in a year an a half! this is causing massive oil leaks and needs to be fixed! the whole damn thingb I'm getting really pissed about this.

18 Engine Oil Leaking problem of the 2011 Chevrolet Cruze

Failure Date: 10/31/2017

Oil leaking just below dipstick. Not from the dipstick itself but from a horizontal crease below it. Oil leaked onto heat shield and down onto exhaust. Burning smell comes through air vents making it hard to breathe in cab. Noticed this after driving on the interstate and minor city traffic.

19 Engine Oil Leaking problem of the 2012 Chevrolet Cruze

Failure Date: 10/14/2017

The car has had all recall work done for both issues however the vehicle is spewing oil again and even after the brakes have been replaced the vehicle does not stop when in reverse or moving slowly forward. Chevy states that these issues are now my issue and and spends because recall work is only one year on the warranty. When backing out from a parking spot or driveway the vehicle does not stop when the brakes are pressed and oil leaks randomly. In 2015 as they made the reveal repair the vehicle caught fire, however they claimed to have repaired the issue.

22 Engine Oil Leaking problem of the 2012 Chevrolet Cruze

Failure Date: 10/29/2016

My 2012 chevy Cruze eco suddenly lost power and acceleration was very poor on 10/29/2016. Almost got hit trying to pull out from a stop sign because the power was no longer there to take off. After having an auto mechanic shop look at the car on 10/31/2016 we discovered that the oil line from the block or where the oil supply comes from for the turbo had been a plastic line that had melted and stopped oil from flowing to the turbo charger. This appears to be a poor design on gm's part to use plastic lines for something that will obviously be transferring hot oil. It seems to have caused the turbo to burn up and also created an exhaust leak . I am still waiting on a final price from the mechanic shop to find out how much damage was done. They have called me today 11/1/2016 and asked that I come in so they can show me more damage they have found as a result of this line melting. I have spoken to one of the owners at russell barnett family of dealerships and they were of no help stating that it is out of warranty. Really? it is a defective design flaw so why should I be having to pay for the repair? I would like some help with this issue please! I know I have 140000+/- miles on the car but it has been mostly highway miles and maintenance has always been done on the vehicle. I use this for my work and family vehicle so it is not driven hard or abused in anyway. I hate the fact of turning in a complaint that involves a dealer that I have recommended to so many people in the past but he was of no help at all and really showed no concern that there was an issue like this with a vehicle that he had sold.

23 Engine Oil Leaking problem of the 2012 Chevrolet Cruze

Failure Date: 04/15/2015

The contact owns a 2012 Chevrolet Cruze. The contact stated that that while at an independent mechanic for routine repairs, the mechanic diagnosed that there was oil leaking from the turbo into the intake hose and the turbo needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. In addition, the contact stated that the vehicle stalled. The contact was unable to restart the vehicle. The vehicle was towed to a dealer who diagnosed that the cam cover assembly needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired; however, the failure recurred. In addition, while driving at 10 mph, the brake pedal was depressed but the vehicle failed to stop. The contact had to apply force to the brake pedal in order to get the vehicle to stop, however, the contact crashed into the rear of another vehicle. There were no injuries and a police report was not filed. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The contact was aware of NHTSA campaign number: 13v360000 (service brakes, hydraulic), however, the VIN was not included. The failure mileage was 88,000.

24 Engine Oil Leaking problem of the 2011 Chevrolet Cruze

Failure Date: 02/21/2015

My Chevrolet dealer informed me that my 2011 chevy Cruze has a leak in the transmission oil cooler lines. Is there or will there be a recall for this problem. I noticed (NHTSA campaign number:14v152000) the chevy silverado, suburban, sierra, tahoe, and yukon had a recall for transmission cooler line issues. Please let me know if/when Chevrolet will reimburse for the replacement and repair for this health and safety issue(potential vehicle fire). Thank you for your attention regarding this matter.

26 Engine Oil Leaking problem of the 2012 Chevrolet Cruze

Failure Date: 06/29/2014

C/s ses light was on. I took car to norman frede Chevrolet for repairs. The determined that there was a vacuum leak at the engine cam cover and replaced it - or so they said. Here is the invoice statement: "po171 vac leak at engine cam cover 4060930/0. 6 replace engine cam cover. Clear code 6061" after getting the car back, I went to nbt and had the oil changed. The next morning I drove to dallas from houston. On the way, I had another code light and called the dealership. When I got back from dallas on Sunday June 29, 2013, I discovered that there was oil on the back of my car bumper and trunk. I took it to nbt and they inspected it and confirmed that they did nothing wrong to cause the oil leak. Nbt confirmed that the engine was leaking oil at the cam cover. I dropped the vehicle at norman frede on Sunday and am in the process of getting to the bottom of the problem. The nbt person was surprised that the cam cover was plastic. This oil leak could have caused an engine fire. I am also concerned about a plastic cam cover. Should not a cam cover be metal? is this a chronic problem?.

27 Engine Oil Leaking problem of the 2012 Chevrolet Cruze

28 Engine Oil Leaking problem of the 2011 Chevrolet Cruze

Failure Date: 07/23/2012

Received a safety recall notice on July 2012 for oil spills/leaks onto hot surfaces. I took my car into robbins Chevrolet dealership for check up immediately on July 23, 2012 and they modified the engine shield. Also, the battery was leaking acid and they replaced the battery, cables and fuse, block-cleaned.

29 Engine Oil Leaking problem of the 2011 Chevrolet Cruze

Failure Date: 05/15/2012

I brought my new car in for a oil change on 5-15-12, they forgot to put the oil cap back on and I had oil everywhere inside my car it was a complete mess, I did not know it was smoking because it was a rainy and foggy night. By the time we parked it we thought it was on fire, my husband checked the oil and it was empty, we got towed back to chevy of milford to be fixed and cleaned, they said that there was oil in it and only a little came out. [not true] I don't really think the car runs the same after that, it spits and spudders alot. On July 23rd 2012 I bring it back to them for a recall # 12081. And asked them to also check why my car spudders and to check for a slow leak in the back tire. They got back to me later that morning and said, there is nothing wrong with the way it drives, and my tire cant be fixed I would have to buy another for $125. 00 because of where the hole was it could not be patched. I told them no on the tire and took it to a tire place, townfair tire took the screw out of it witch they didn't find [chevy of milford] and patched it from the inside at n/c. On 7-24-2012. I really don't feel safe in this car anymore after chevy of milford looked at it twice and came back with 2 lies. I don't even trust that they did the recall for all I know. Where do I go from here? please help, I have 2 small grandchildren I drive around in this car.

30 Engine Oil Leaking problem of the 2011 Chevrolet Cruze

Failure Date: 02/29/2012

1st the vehicle failed to shift into reverse. The torque converter had disassembled and transmission was replaced. One month later the engine began to smoke, the valve cover had melted and needed to be replaced gm charged me for this under warranty part. Then, I was making a left hand turn onto a residential street my vehicle began to smoke inside the vehicle. I shut down the car and looked under the hood oil was in the anti freeze fill tank, I called gm they sent a truck and took it to dealership. The result; gm told dealership to replace engine, called back and said don't replace try to fix it. They replaced the turbo charger, turbo cooler, and oil cooler, only to have me back 5-6 times with cooling problems, the vehicle still has cooling issues, and goes back for service every two weeks or so. The vehicle was brought back to service as there were still shifting problems. They found the torque converter disassembled and transmission had to be replaced again, and then again a few months later. The vehicle has a steering issue that has been brought to the their attention. The steering locks up periodically when traveling over 30mph, and has made me afraid I will be driving and lock up permanently. The brakes are an issue on the vehicle now and prior to recall for brake assist, it is still hard to stop the vehicle. And brakes have to be replaced every 3 months. There is definitely an electrical issue with this vehicle as the emergency flashers worked periodically then completely stopped working, as well as the running lights burning out within a month of replacement on the passenger side of the vehicle. The dealership feels its not a problem. This vehicle may shut off from electrical issues eventually. When using the air conditioner the dashboard fills with over a half inch of condensation and leaks out of the vents profusely. Valve cover had to be replaced again.

Why is my car leaking oil on the passenger side?

Most commonly, this happens when the oil pan gasket or valve cover gasket are over-tightened. It can also happen when tightness is not evenly distributed. Another reason can be the improper attachment of the oil filter, as the engine oil flows continuously through it, and if it's loose, you can experience a leak there.
