2007 jeep commander transmission fluid dipstick location

OK.....I do realize my 3.7 has to be taken to dealer to have transmission fluid level checked (No trans. dipstick). And I know this question has been asked before, but...I bought my 2007 Laredo at a Jeep/Chrysler dealer about a month ago. Supposedly they do what's called a 128 point inspection on all their used cars. Does anyone think that I should trust that they did check my transmission fluid level as part of this 128 point inspection?? ( I actually asked my salesman if he thought they checked it and he said yes, they MOST LIKELY did)...I don't trust that he TRULY knows and that's all I could get out of him...lol. I did make a makeshift dipstick out of a 36" zip tie...Mostly just to see what the trans. fluid looked like. It seemed like it had a decent level (although I had no kind of high/low level lines on zip tie). And the fluid is a good pink/redish color....So MAYBE they did check it during this so called 128 point inspection?......Sooo....What should I do??. Do I take it to dealer and have them use the star scan and check it the correct way and subsequently get charged (after just buying the vehicle). Or does anyone know a way that I can do it myself that is not too complicated??.....GRRRR!!...I really hate the whole Mercedes transmission/no dipstick dilemma. I do appreciate your feedback.

When i´m not wrong you can buy a dipstick to check the fluid level in the NAG1. Maybe one of the WK guys can chime in which dipstick to get. I also would like to verify the level after buying a vehicle and it is always good to have a dipstick for future checks or if you want to service it yourself.

I use a 36 in zip tie also for my LX with the NAG1 transmission. Just put marks 5mm apart on the tie. I marked mine up to 40mm at 5mm intervals. The problem you'll have is getting an accurate fluid temperature reading, (I have a DashHawk on mine that reads the fluid temperature.) so you can get a true reading.

All this being said, I had my fluid level checked by the stealer when the vehicle was new (about 300 miles on it), and had not checked it since. My philosophy is that if it isn't putting anything on the ground, it's obviously not leaking. It is now time for me to do my 60K fluid/filter change (I do it more often than the book says), so I thought I'd check it before I do the changeout. Seems that, according to the chart, the fluid level has been overfull for almost 60K. The transmission has always, and continues to work flawlessly. My next problem is, when I change the fluid/filter, do I put the level back where it's been for nearly 60K or do I fill it per the chart?

For you, I would recommend you take it to the stealer this time, and then keep an eye on the floor and maybe periodically check it yourself with your zip tie dipstick. You may want to mark it right after they "bless" it so you'll have a reference point. Make sure the transmission is at operating temperature first......after about 30 miles of driving.

Thanks for the input.....I also read where someone took one of those digital food temperature probes and took the sensor out of the poker part. There's about a 30" cord that it comes with. This person somehow taped it to his 36" zip tie (marked) and/or dipstick then pushed it into dipstick hole and was able to get an accurate temperature AND level at the same time. The guy even cross referenced the temperature probe with a star scanner and it turned out to be spot on.....I think I'm going to try this. I've read where several people have done this with accurate results.

You can buy an oem one for about 30 shipped online. I forget where I got mine though. EBay or rockauto

Frango - I looked at that attachment. Specifically says if just doing a drain and filter change (no overhaul) the tranny will take 7.4 L or 14.8 pints. This is the equivalent to 7.4 quarts.

Is this document applicable to a 2008 WK 3.7L (6 cyl) motor? I am taking the fluid and filter change project on and I will just refill to that instead of having to worry about zip tie and checking level etc. Much easier this way. Fill it and be done with as long as don't have leaks after I do the job Please confirm but I would assume this is for the 3.7 L. The larger 4.7 and 5.7 L trannies have dipsticks. Not sure of the 6.1L HEMI. The 3.0 L Diesel also doesn't have a dip according to my manual.

**Update** I picked up the dip and turns out at least for my Jeep it won't go in all the way. Instructions calls for that it does but it doesn't work for me and I then later read after more research that it's not to be a stay in design. It's only used for measuring. I will see how I make out with it.

I am still interested if this document is providing the right fluid amount. I want to get to this job tomorrow. Read from someone else that measured all his ATF drained from his 2008 WK 3.7L and equated to 6 quarts and he got it properly measured at the dealer after he did the job. So that's a considerable difference to the 7.4 quarts stated in Frangos attachment here.

See my Post No. 3. IMO, unless you're going to use a $20 dipstick (that obviously doesn't work) all the time, I'd just spend $5 and get a 5 pack of 36 in. zip ties and use one out of the pack for your dipstick. Mark it as I said above and you'll be good to go.....as long as you know the trans. fluid temp. when you check it. Then check it again if you ever see any fluid on the ground. IMO, no need to check it every week/month.

When I did miy LX with the NAG1, I drained the fluid, changed the filter, put a Mercedes pan with a drain plug on it, and added slightly less fluid than I took out. This amounted to 4 quarts. Immediately after I changed the fluid/filter I put it in storage, so I didn't do an accurate check. I'll be pulling it out of storage next week, at which time I'll drive it to operating temp. and do a check to see how it looks. I think you'll find that 7 quarts is way too much for a NAG1. On the other hand the 545RFE in my WK took 8 quarts to bring it to full after fluid/filters change.
