Striker plate and location.

This bulletin applies to 2017-2019 Jeep Compass vehicles. The engine stop/start (ESS) may be inoperative. Customers may experience a MIL on. DTC P152F (engine hood switch 2/engine hood switch 1 correlation) may be set. The customer may also note that the ESS will turn off with a message displayed in the cluster and stay off while driving.

Using a scan tool with the appropriate diagnostic procedures available in Service Library/TechCONNECT, verify that all related systems are functioning as designed. If DTCs or symptoms other than the ESS issue are present, record and repair as needed before proceeding.

1.    Open and secure the hood.

2.    Using a trim stick or equivalent, remove the old striker plate from the hood and discard.

3.    Install a new striker plate by engaging the fastener into the hood.  The new striker plate has an installation position and a locked position. Do not compress the striker pin before installation. Failure to do so will lock the striker plate and it will have to be discarded.

4.    Once the new striker plate has been properly installed, push the striker pin into the striker body to engage the lock.

5.    Close the hood.

6.    Clear all DTCs that may have been set.

A new striker plate is available as P/N 68417561AA.

After having some body work done, my car now says “Auto Start/stop not available”. Car is running fine. Dealership said I needed a battery as one of the cells was bad. Replaced the battery and still have the error message. Any ideas?

Update: Aux battery fixed it! I have seen so many message boards etc about this same problem so that is what worked for me.

Is it the orange light on the dash?

I know on the screen for it it will say why it isn't workingn (I.e. It's charging or wheels not straight)

I also have issues when it's been cold where it thinks the battery is dead but when it gets nice out it's fine.

Yes orange symbol on dash only. It just says “service not available” on the screen. It’s not cold here anymore, I had read that could be the issue too but unfortunately not the case anymore.

I have the same orange light on my dash and it's because I need to swap out my aux battery

level 2

That could be it. Glad I just spent $$ on a battery I didn’t need lol ugh

level 2

Yep there’s 2 batteries. This fixed mine.

I had the same problem - first I had to replace my regular car battery, then I had to replace the stop/start battery. The second one fixed the issue.

Going today to have aux battery replaced. If this doesn’t solve it…I’m not spendin NO MO $!

re: New Jeep Compass | Engine idling stop & start malfunction

Going a bit off topic, but as part of a stop & start thread it is good to understand smart alternators. As they have become an integral part of start/stop technology

Smart alternators were fitted from Euro 5 onwards together with automatic rear lights. This to save fuel. The average car owner will hardly notice this saving. The ECU regulates the charge as needed.

Smart alternators were mass introduced from 2009 onwards. The technology in itself is not that new. There have been a few cars that were fitted with similar system since the mid 90s. There is no specific or defined way on how a smart alternator works. All manufacturers have their own way. although the main principle are similar. For instance, depending on brand/make it could be the ECU, the BCM or the PCM controlling the charge. The biggest difference is how the charge is actually controlled.

The smart alternator charges at between 12,8 and 13,7V while a conventional alternator charges at 14,4V. It charges when you are slowing down or braking.

This is what a conventional alternator looks like:

And this is what it looks like on a smart alternator:

Contrary what most of the internet will tell you, smart alternators do also charge at higher voltage than a conventional alternator. Actually voltage level can be very high to produce fast inrush of current into the battery to reduce start battery recovery time. So this is typically immediately after you have started your engine, or have not used your car for a long period of time and the battery has lost its charge.

Sure the average driver will not know the charge level of the battery but a trickle charger is needed for all cars to keep the battery in charge.

A normally well maintained car should not need a trickle charger ever. If it does there is something wrong with it, or you are leaving it unused for too long period of time.

I have three classic cars that are always on a trickle charge. The reason is simple. these cars dont get used much, especially during the winter months. So each has its own CTek charger. Actually, some of the more high end Ctek chargers are effectively smart chargers.

Next to my three classic cars, we also own and run three modern cars. All have start/stop system and none have ever been on a trickle charger.

A car battery is not not a fit and forget component in a car. It has to be maintained.

I dont agree. If your car battery is not properly charged either something is wrong, or you have not used your car often enough. It should not require any attention or maintenance. My classic cars are the exception (low usage).

Modern cars do put quite a bit of load on the battery, even when the engine and ignition is switched off. We have some other threads on this phenomena. Obviously, ambient temperature plays a significant role in how long a battery will hold a sufficient charge. But as long as the temperature doesnt drop below 0oC any car should still start up after 6 weeks of no use easily.

I see you live in Oslo, maybe batteries require more attention especially during winter month. I spend a lot of my time in Sweden and I dont see any Swedes hooking up their cars to trickle charger enmass during winter either.

(11) Thanks

What could prevent a start/stop system from working?

The engine temperature is too high or too low. If the engine is not heated by consumers or by the battery, it must generate its own heat by combustion, which requires a higher starting current. The result: The start-stop function is not activated.

What does it mean to service stop/start system?

Stop/Start Technology automatically stops and starts the vehicle's engine under certain conditions. By turning off the engine when not needed, Stop/Start Technology can help improve fuel efficiency, thereby reducing greenhouse gas emissions (compared to the same vehicle with Stop/Start Technology not in use).

What does it mean when your Jeep says stop

Battery temperature is too warm or cold. Battery charge is low. The vehicle is on a steep grade.
