After watching the 8th episode of HameFura X and seeing Ginger and Fray get more screen time, I was compelled to translate a part of the HameFura Web Novel from Ginger’s POV, titled ある公爵令嬢について (About a Certain Duke’s Daughter). It never made it to the LNs, and while it’s still possible that they’ll add it in a future SS collection volume (like V5), I thought I’d TL it now anyway just in case. Splitting it into four or five parts as the web novel chapter is fairly long. This is only part 1 and I’ll be continuing it on my free time. Will probably post part 2 tomorrow. About the formatting: I’m sorry, I tried to keep the formatting the same as the 小説家になろう website but somehow, tumblr won’t let me add line breaks well. It looks okay on the permalink but not on the dashboard. Maybe I’ll just add a google docs link once I finish everything. (Yamaguchi-sensei usually presses enter for the next sentence, then they do it twice for new paragraphs, and sometimes thrice for breaks.) Translator’s Note: Japanese is my third language and I’m not nearly as fluent in it as I am in Filipino or English. I don’t have much experience in translating in general (mostly subbing clips and trailers before) either. However, I’ve been living and working in JPN for 5 years now, and I’m fairly confident this is mostly accurate (though probably more literal than liberal as far as translation goes). I am always willing to learn though so if you spot any mistakes or inconsistencies, or just wanna talk to me about HameFura, I’m leaving my ask box open. :) ある公爵令嬢について (About a Certain Duke’s Daughter) Part 1 My name is Ginger Tucker, a baron’s daughter. That being said, I am an illegitimate child, born between the baron and a servant with no social status. On top of that, my father, Baron Tucker, is quite the amorous man, having women and children all over. I am the twelfth child, and honestly, someone they really have no need of. That is why, normally, I should have been taken to my mother’s house to be raised quietly. In fact, aside from the children of his first wife, all of Baron Tucker’s children had been raised in their mothers’ homes. The reason why I was raised in Baron Tucker’s household (though to be exact, in a detached building away from the manor) was because my mother died shortly after giving birth to me, and she had no other relatives. In short, I was taken in by the baron because there was no other place for me. And so, while I was sent to the Tucker family’s solitary house out of pity, there wasn’t anyone who would pay attention to the child of a no-name mistress; I was mostly left alone. Nevertheless, thankfully, I was given food and clothing. I was even allowed to go to a school in the neighborhood when I entered school age. And unlike the usual stories you hear about legitimate children bullying their half-sibling born from a low-ranking mistress, I received virtually no harassment. If we happened to meet, at most, they would just look at me with scorn. Because of that, I lived my life alone away from the Tucker family without any big problems. And, ever since I’ve had an awareness of my surroundings, I’ve been thinking about leaving the estate to work when I come of age at 15. Since the Tucker household has many sons for successorship and beautiful daughters of marriageable age, they most likely don’t need anyone plain-looking like me, so it’s best to just leave. I already told Baron Tucker, my father and the one who provided for me, about my plans, but I didn’t get a reply. He probably forgot. In the first place, Baron Tucker took me in because he was concerned about what the society would think otherwise but… He was probably thinking something like, “Did I have such a daughter?” I wasn’t blessed with a beautiful appearance, but fortunately, I seem to have a good head on my shoulders. At the school I was going to, I was always the top of the class and was trusted by the teachers. However, I wasn’t able to get close to any of the other students who attended the same school. Since I spent most of my childhood alone, I didn’t know how to interact with people. Even though I had intended to interact normally, people talked behind my back, saying I have a bad attitude. Granted, I was still a daughter of a baron so I was not openly bullied, but I still had to deal with many small harassments and unpleasantness. As those days continued, I began thinking there was no benefit in involving myself with these kinds of people. I am gonna graduate from school, find a good workplace and leave the Tucker household once I come of age. Yes, every day, I would repeat this in my heart like a spell. However, my long-term plan crumbled as I was approaching my twelfth birthday. There were only a few years left before I graduated, and it was the time when I was starting to think about my employment more specifically for when I turned fifteen. It happened very unexpectedly. I somehow ended up inadvertently activating wind magic. I knew that magic existed in this country, but having attended a commoner’s school in the countryside, I didn’t think it had anything to do with me... It was all very shocking. After this, my life significantly changed. First, Baron Tucker, who had ignored me until then--or rather, who had totally forgotten about my existence--came to me with a big smile saying, “As expected of my daughter.” As far as I could remember, he had never called me daughter before, so I had complicated feelings about it. After that, Baron Tucker started paying attention to me. So much so that it had exceeded the number of interactions I’ve had since birth in just a matter of days. And just like the baron, all the servants who ignored me until then started fawning over me as well. I also moved from the now-familiar detached house to the manor. No matter how much I said I wanted to stay at the detached house, no one listened, forcefully dragging me out saying, “We can’t let the young lady, the first magic wielder of the Tucker household, stay in such a place.” Yes. I became the first member of the Tucker household to have magic powers. In this country, where having magical powers influences your standing as a noble, Baron Tucker’s household, unfortunately, never had a magic wielder before. And now that its first magic wielder finally appeared, it seemed as though it didn’t matter anymore whether they were a child of a low-ranking mistress. I, a once-forgotten existence, had suddenly become a candidate for successorship. This was how my peaceful life had ended. I was forced to quit the school I was attending and was assigned a private tutor like the children of his first wife. This is so that I could enter the Academy of Magic once I turn fifteen years old. While I began to be pampered by Baron Tucker and the servants, his wife and children started to hate me. Well of course that would be the case. This child, who up until recently, was looked down upon as a child of a mistress and was treated like an existence no more than a garden rock, had now turned up uninvited. Hametsu Sunzen-hen 2 Mangaka: Nishi Original Creator: Satoru Yamaguchi Original Character Design: Nami Hidaka Label: ZERO-SUM Comics Release Date: 25 January 2021 My Score: 4/5 Spoiler warning: This is more-or-less a basic summary of the events in the volume so don’t read this if you don’t want to be spoiled. The first half of this volume is mostly about Keith as Katarina tries to repair his relationship with her family. In this universe, Katarina never befriended Keith as a child and her mother thinks that Keith is her husband’s illegitimate child so his presence has put a strain on their relationship. Keith himself is very different to how he is in the main series and his resting bitch face gave me many laughs. Also, we don’t get to see much of Katarina’s dad in the main series but I like him here. His relationship with Katarina seems very cute and I’d like to see more of it. The conflict between Katarina’s parents did conclude a little too quickly for my taste, but I liked Katarina’s interactions with Keith and it was different enough to the resolution of his chapter in the main series to be interesting. Then there’s a chapter with Jeord who continues to observe the changes with Katarina. I don’t think I mentioned it last volume so I’ll mention it now but Katarina has taken up sword fighting lessons with a new character named Gran who seems a bit suspicious and hasn’t made much of an impression on me beyond that. The next chapter finally introduces Sophia and Nicole. The dynamics here are not very different to how they are in the main series but it was nice to see them here. And with this, Katarina’s Gal Group is complete so the final chapter focuses on Maria and has her start to fit in with the rest of the group more. We don’t get to see much of her dynamics with Mary and Sophia, unfortunately, but her relationship with Shiena is pretty interesting. Then there are two side chapters. In the first, Keith discovers Katarina’s field, and the second is more of a tease for the third volume where a villain is hinted at. I really enjoy watching these characters interact so I really liked this volume but I wish that the dynamics and personalities in this alternative universe were more distinct from their main series counterparts. The events that lead them to befriending Katarina are very similar as well. Keith is the one exception where his personality and arc is quite different to his counterpart. It is still an enjoyable series but I think that’s more down to the fact that I’m already attached to these characters rather than anything particularly good that the manga is doing and it doesn’t really add anything new to the series. I’ll be reading volume 3 when it comes out. Also, I do plan to get to the new volume in the main series pretty soon. This is the last part. :) No beta for my TLs so I’m sorry for typos/grammatical mistakes. ^^; ———— I am considerate, kind, cute…… What is that dumb noble lady even saying…… I really don’t know what that person called Katarina means. I quickly made my way through the academy courtyard. I didn’t particularly have any destination, but I just couldn’t stay still. And as I wandered around the garden aimlessly, “I am really sick of that woman.” “She’s not smart, and her magic is even weak. People fawn over her just because of her status!” “Exactly, that kind of woman doesn’t suit Prince Jeord!” “Prince Jeord and the rest of the student council should wake up already and do away with that stupid girl!” I heard several ladies talk like that in a harsh tone. And from the content of the conversation, I figured out who they were talking about. While there are many who adore her, I had heard that she was envied by some of the ladies by virtue of her being the fiancée of the perfect Prince Jeord, as well as being well-liked by the other remarkable members of the student council. However, this is the first time I’ve happened upon a situation like this, where she was actually being maligned. I unconsciously stopped my tracks, and from the shadows, approached the girls. “I can’t stand her. She’s such an eyesore!” With no one around, the girls’ behavior became worse. “That girl with nothing but her status should just up and disappear!” “Exactly!” Hearing those words, something inside me suddenly burst open. It’s true that Katarina Claes is a dumb weirdo with little magical powers. But…... She is not someone with only her social status like these ladies were saying. What’s more, she is not someone who deserved to be spoken of like this. “Wha-What?!” “What’s this!!” A sudden gust of wind blew in, messing up the well-groomed hair and dresses of the ladies. Satisfied with seeing their flustered visages, I quietly left the place so as not to be seen. After all, we are fundamentally forbidden from using our magic for private affairs when inside the academy; it would be bad if someone discovered me. However, just after I started walking, Fray, who had apparently chased after me, was standing there with a sly grin on her face. “Ginger, you really do like Lady Katarina after all.” I glared at Fray, who started giggling once more, with all my might. ★★★★★ “Here, Ginger, this one’s good too. You’ve been working hard all this time, so take a quick break and join me!” Grinning as she said this, Katarina, my—Jeord Stuart’s—fiancée, held out a snack to a member of the student council and our underclassman, Ginger Tucker. And then—even though normally she’d be rather curt and say something like, “No, thank you, please leave it there for later”—today, Ginger said, “Thank you very much.” And took the sweets obediently. Thinking it unusual, I stealthily watched her, only to discover that the always poker-faced Ginger had a hint of a smile on her lips. On top of that, if you looked closely, her face was getting a little red. Seeing the situation, I almost sighed as I thought: not again. Ginger Tucker. She’s one academic year younger than me, and while she has weak magical powers, she is talented to the extent that her academic capabilities are said to be one of the best in recent decades; there are already many organizations who are looking to scout her after she graduates. The girl had always somewhat exuded an air aloofness and maintained a certain distance from everyone, but…... She finally fell for Katarina……. No, it seems like she was made to fall. In the beginning, when she just joined the student council, it didn’t seem like Ginger had a very good impression of Katarina. That’s why she wasn’t particularly close to Katarina, but…… One day, she discovered Katarina’s secret (though Katarina herself didn’t really think of it as a secret, the people around her endeavored to keep it hidden to protect her honor as a Duke’s daughter)—that Katarina was tending to a vegetable field inside the academy, and their relationship quickly became closer. Or rather, it was Katarina who continuously and one-sidedly approached Ginger. Katarina was apparently very happy that Ginger ate her freshly harvested produce deliciously. It seemed that Ginger was quite bewildered with how Katarina, an upperclassman, kept approaching her. But maybe it was because of Katarina’s honesty and friendliness that, even though she’s a little curt about it, she would still wind up keeping Katarina company, properly dealing with her. And because of that, Katarina became even more attached to Ginger. And then, over time, I felt that Ginger’s attitude towards Katarina was gradually softening. However, with what was happening today, it seems that Ginger, too, had finally been completely captivated by Katarina. Even though the person herself is completely unaware, my fiancée, Katarina is an unbelievable people-charmer. She charms people as soon as I take my eyes off of her. Men, women, young or old—it doesn't matter. Ever since we got engaged at the age of eight, Katarina had only been continuously increasing the number of Katarina devotees just like this. Even as I resigned myself to this situation, I can’t help but want her to show a little more restraint. I don’t want her to seduce any more people, especially those with power. I already have too many rivals as it is. It would be very troublesome if the very capable Ginger Tucker is taken in by Mary, the leader of the alliance that had been trying to get in between my relationship with Katarina. Inwardly, I sighed deeply at the thought of yet another new concern. And when I looked towards my fiancée, the source of my worries, she was just smiling happily as usual.
