If you’re in the market for an SUV with a little luxury and a lot of prestige, then you’re bound to have come across the Range Rover Evoque and the Audi Q5 during your search.

One has a great off-roading British heritage, and the other has amazing German engineering, and both of them had new models in 2016 (which we will discuss here) but which one is right for you?

Price

There isn’t much of a price difference between the two, but you may find the Audi Q5 to be on the top end of the scale when looking at the equivalent cars.

But if you want to weigh it up in terms of what you get for your coinage, then check out what comes as standard on the base models – the SE model (both cars have the SE as their base trim!)

The latest model (2016) of the Evoque comes with a heated front windscreen as standard as well as its renowned InControl Touch Navigation system which includes SatNav, Bluetooth, DAB and even climate control.

The latest model of the Q5 (2016) on the other hand is still pretty well equipped with DAB radio, Bluetooth and cruise control as just some of the features you can get on the standard trim.

Styling

Both cars share the same type of shape, but have some drastic differences in their styles.

The Q5 has stayed true the unique Audi styling with its dominating grille and chunky headlamps. The body itself is rounded which makes a noticeable contrast between itself and the Range Rover’s angular features.

Unlike the Audi, the Range Rover doesn’t look a lot like its Land Rover cousins with its sleek headlamps and sharp lines.

Plus, the Evoque can come as a 5-door SUV, a 3-door coupe, and even a 3-door coupe convertible which are a little more rare. It can also boast that it has limited edition Victoria Beckham models which is something the Q5 can’t live up to!

Interior

You’ve heard what comes as standard, but what other features can you enjoy inside as you go up the trims?

The top spec Evoque Autobiography trim makes your interior luxurious, comfortable and classy. You’ll get Oxford leather throughout the cabin, premium front and rear car mats with edging and some practical features such as park assist and panoramic roof which is available on the next trim down.

The top level S Line plus trim on the Q5 includes an MMI Navigation Plus which includes SatNav, CD/DVD player, front sports seats in Fine Nappa leather and S line embossed electric lumbar support, and S Line steering wheel. You may even find models on the used market with this trim with a digital TV that the front passenger can watch without distracting the driver.

There’s plenty of room to fit passengers in both of these cars, which make them great as luxury family cars too.

Boot space

When it comes to boot room, the Evoque has more space with the seats up with 575L compared to the Q5s 540L capacity. But the tables turn when the seats are down, as the Q5 comes out on top with 1560L compared to the Evoque’s 1445L capacity.

Engines

If you’re not doing long motorway miles and are looking for a petrol car, then you only have a choice of one engine in the Evoque – the 2.0L Si4 automatic engine which has a combined MPG of 36.2, which isn’t the best you can find on the market, but it can get from 0-60 in 7.1 seconds.

In the Q5 you’ll also only be able to find one petrol engine, but you will have a choice of a manual or automatic gearbox.  The manual 2.0 TFSI Quattro gets 37.2mpg combined with 18” wheels and the automatic version will get 38.7mpg combined on 18” alloys, so does better than the Evoque – but only just.

When it comes to diesel, both the Evoque and the Q5 have a lot to offer!

For the Audi, the 3.0 TDI Quattro is best for acceleration with a 0-62 speed of 6.2 seconds, whereas if you’re after fuel efficiency, then the best you can choose from the Audi range is the 2.0 TDI quattro engine which has a combined MPG of 49.6 on 18” alloys.

The Evoque comes out on top if you’re after fuel economy. The 2.0L eD4 engine has a combined MPG of 68.8 for the coupe, and 65.6mpg for the 5 door!

The verdict

Since there isn’t too much difference in the way of pricing, a lot of your choice depends on style, whether you want the smooth curvy lines of the Q5 or the more angular and defined look of the Evoque.

The Evoque is the one you want to go for if you’re a little more fussed about the pennies at the pumps, but if you’re after performance, then go for the Q5 or even the SQ5for a great performance vehicle.

At the end of the day, the choice is up to you, but if you’re still unsure, why not come into store and take them both for a test drive?
