How to reset oil life in honda civic

by Leonardo R. Grabkowski

Newer Honda Civic models manufactured after 2005 are equipped with an engine oil life monitoring system. This system serves as a maintenance reminder and lets you know when to change your Civic's oil. After the oil is changed, the Civic's oil status indicator needs to be reset. In most cases, your dealer will reset the indicator for you; however, you can reset it yourself at home without tools.

Step 1

Insert your key into the ignition, and turn it to the "On" position but do not start the engine.

Step 2

Press the "SEL" button on the steering column control panel until the words "Oil Life" appear on the odometer.

Step 3

Press and hold the "SEL" button for approximately 10 seconds or until the "Oil Life" display begins to blink. Release the button when the display blinks.

Step 4

Press and hold the "SEL" button for five seconds until the display flashes and the "Oil Life" display resets to 100 percent.

  • How do I reset a Honda Civic oil light?

The oil light on my old Honda Civic won’t go away even though I’ve had it serviced recently. What can I do? Is there a way to reset the light?

Drivers often have issues with their oil lights not turning off after an oil change. While most repair shops will manually reset it for you, some mechanics may forget. To manually reset your Honda Civic’s oil light:

  1. Put your car in accessory mode. If you aren’t sure how, turn your key once in your ignition while parked, but don’t start the car.
  2. Hold down the SEL/RESET button. When the oil light begins to flash, you can let go.
  3. Hold the button again. When the light stops blinking, the oil light will be properly reset.

    • How do you reset the oil life on a Honda Civic 2019?

Is there a way to reset the oil life in my Honda Civic from 2019? The indicator didn’t reset when I got my oil changed, but I don’t want to take it back to the shop just for that.

That sounds frustrating! Luckily, it’s not too hard to reset the oil life in a 2019 Honda Civic. Here are the steps you’ll need to follow:

    1. Go to the home screen and select Settings.
    2. Select Vehicle, then click Maintenance Info.
    3. Click Select Reset Items.
    4. Select Engine Oil Life.

Once you do this, your oil life indicator should return to 100%. You may need to take another trip to the shop if you have any more problems with your indicator, or if you notice a burning smell, strange noises, or rough handling when driving. These things could be indicators of a leak or another issue with your system, so it’s best to get them checked out by a professional.
