If you receive Social Security benefits, the easiest way to change your address and phone number is by creating a personal my Social Security account at www.ssa.gov/myaccount. Once you create your account, you can update your contact information from your preferred location.

This feature is available for people who receive retirement, survivors, or disability benefits, along with Medicare enrollees. If you receive Supplemental Security Income, you can check the address that we have on record with your account.

Visit our my Social Security webpage to get started.  To create an account, you must:

  • Be at least 18 years old;
  • Provide a valid email address;
  • Have a Social Security number (SSN); and
  • Provide a U.S. mailing address (includes military addresses, APO/FPO/DPO, AE, AP, or AA).

Once you have a valid email address, you are ready to create your personal my Social Security account. When you visit my Social Security, select the “Create an Account” button. You will have the option to create your new my Social Security account with one of our two credential partners: Login.gov or ID.me.

  • Login.gov is the public’s one account for simple, secure, and private access to participating U.S. government agencies.
  • ID.me is a single sign-on provider that meets the U.S. government’s online identity proofing and authentication requirements.

Please note, if you already have a Login.gov or ID.me account, you can select the appropriate button to sign in with either one and access your personal my Social Security account. If you previously verified your identity with Login.gov or ID.me, you don’t need to do so again. If you don’t have a Login.gov or ID.me account, please select the “Create an Account” link to start the one-time registration process.

If you create a new Login.gov credential, we will still complete the identity verification part, so you will need to provide some personal information to us. You will also receive an activation code from us to complete the process.

Remember, you can do much of your business with us online at www.ssa.gov/onlineservices.

If you receive Social Security income, you may be concerned about payments continuing if you change location. A change of address notification is required for those who receive Social Security benefits, Supplemental Security Income or Medicare. If you don’t receive benefits yet, you don’t need to notify the Social Security office of an address change.

The Social Security Administration requires that you notify the office of the new address as soon as you know it. Even if you receive your benefits through direct deposit, the agency will want to have your correct address so it can send you information as needed. “It is recommended that you go through the process of changing your address prior to actually moving by utilizing the feature that lets you specify when the move-in date will come into effect,” says Anthony Martin, founder and CEO of Choice Mutual in Reno, Nevada. “If you move without changing your address then you may miss important updates and notices from Social Security that could delay future benefits."

Social Security provides retirement, disability, and survivor benefits to workers and their dependents. If you get benefits now but you’ve moved, you must change the mailing address you use for your benefits.

If you don’t get benefits now, but got or applied for them in the past, this address change ensures you’ll get other notices from Social Security.

General Program Requirements

You can change the mailing address and information for your Social Security benefits at any time, including after a disaster.

Application Process

If you get Social Security benefits or have Medicare, you can change your address online. To make the change online, you must first create a personal my Social Security account. You may also call or visit a local office to make the change.

If any of the following apply to you, you must call or visit a local office to change your address:

  • I do not have a U.S. mailing address.
  • I do get Supplemental Security Income (SSI).

Use our Office Locator to find the phone number of a local office near you. You can find our safety protocols on the COVID-19 page. Read “Get Help from Social Security.”

If you are outside the U.S., you can find contact information on the Office of Earnings & International Operations page.
