You may apply in person for a passport at the Essex County Clerk's office. Procedures are set by the United States government, which has a Website listing the full requirements for a US Passport as well as the Passport application form, DS-11. The website is www.travel.state.gov.

What you must do:

For a New Passport, all applicants must appear in person at the Clerk’s office. Appointments are required at the Essex County Clerk’s office for passport services. To schedule an appointment, please visit the Home page.

All applicants must appear in person at the Clerk’s office or at one of the Outreach Locations. All applicants must have BOTH parents names on their Birth Certificate, regardless of age. All applicants must have a Social Security number.

Children 15 years of age and under must appear with BOTH parents. Children 16 years of age and over may appear with only one parent. Please DO NOT sign the Passport Application until the Clerk’s representative ask you to do so.

While it’s slightly difficult to pinpoint an exact cost for your passport after it’s “said and done,” it’s important to understand the different passport fees before you apply, so you can be prepared for the total cost of your passport. 

United States Passport Fees

When calculating the cost of your passport, there are two fees that are required by the U.S. Department of State for processing. Regardless of applicant, age, or processing speed needed, these fees are mandatory, and have specific requirements in relation to payment type.

In addition to these required passport fees set by the Department of State, there are also optional fees to help get your passport faster than what routine service can provide.

Passport Application Fees

“Application Fees” for a United States passport are paid to the directly to the U.S. Department of State for processing your passport application. This fee must be paid by check or money order, and must be made to the exact amount. This detail is particularly important, as it is one of the most common reasons for delays in processing times for a United States Passport application. 

Application fees are mandatory and can vary in cost depending on the passport applicant, and whether you’re applying for a U.S. passport “book” or a U.S. passport “card”. You can review these costs as outlined by the U.S. Department of State below.

First-Time Passport:

Adult Passport Book – $130, Adult Passport Card – $30, or $160 for both. 

New Passport (Age 16 and older):

Adult Passport Book – $130, Adult Passport Card – $30, or $160 for both

Child Passport:

Child Passport Book – $100, Child Passport Card – $15, or $115 for both

Passport Execution Fees

Payments for “Execution Fees” for a United States passport are paid directly to a Passport Acceptance Agent at a Passport Acceptance Facility such as the post office, or a Regional Passport Agency. This can also be referred as an “Acceptance Agent Fee”.

Like Application Fees, these Execution Fees are mandatory, and must be paid separately from other fees associated with the total cost of your passport. Also differing from your Application Fee payment, Passport Acceptance Facilities tend to accept a wider range of payment types, such as debit cards, credit cards, or cash.

First-Time Passport:

Adult Passport Book – $35, Adult Passport Card – $35

New Passport (Age 16 and older):

Passport Renewal:

No execution fee if renewing your passport, or renewing by mail.

Child Passport:

Expedited Passport Fees

Unlike Application Fees and Execution Fees that are required by the Department of State to process a United States Passport, Passport Expediting Fees are optional. While not mandatory, expedited passport services may still be required to get your passport in time if you have a specific departure date already set or are planning on traveling sooner than later.

When requesting standard expedited service at a Passport Acceptance Facility or a Regional Passport Agency you will incur an Expediting Fee of $60 in addition to your Application Fees and Execution Fees.

It should be noted that expedited service through an Acceptance Facility, it can take up to 6 weeks to process your passport, not including shipping, or the time that it takes to actually apply. In rarer cases, you may be able to schedule an appointment with a Regional Passport Agency to get your passport as quick as 1-2 days, but there are very strict requirements to get an appointment to apply in person, and are not guaranteed, even if you are eligible.

Using A Private Company to Expedite Your United States Passport

If you need a passport faster than the routine processing service times offered at a Passport Acceptance Facility, you may want to consider using a private Passport Expediting Company.

A private expediting company will take your application directly to the Department of State, where it can be processed in as little as 7 business days. The company will then ship your new passport back to you, usually overnight.

In addition to speeding up the application process, utilizing a private expediting company can also reduce the chance of mistakes that could delay your passport application. If there is a problem or delay at the passport office, the expediting company will notify you and help you resolve the issue right away.

When using a private expediting company, you’ll still need to pay the same Application Fee and Execution Fee as you normally would, but you’ll pay the Expedited Fee to the company expediting your passport.

Expedited Passport Fees when using a private expediting company range and are based on processing times and how quickly you’ll need your passport back in time for your travel plans. While this may be a more expensive option, a Private Expediting Company may be the thing that saves your trip!
