I'm looking at buying an '06 Ody Ex-L with nav and dvd for $6500. It sounds like a good deal to me but it has 196k miles on it and we plan on keeping our next vehicle for several years until the cost of repairs becomes more than the car is worth. Can I reasonably expect an Ody to run past 200k miles without major issues or costly repairs?

Hard question to answer. Any car that is properly cared of should last over 200,000 miles. But most cars are not properly cared for. The Honda engine is one of the best and should keep going for another 100,000 miles. Having said that, there is no way I'd touch that Ody unless it has all the maintenance records with it. Yes, you could reasonably expect an Ody to run past 200k if it has been properly maintained. But there are going to be costly maintenance issues such as timing belt replacement, and it is coming up on time for its second replacement. And the transmission could be another possible expense. But it appears that you are getting a excellent price on the Ody. Such a good price, that I'd want a mechanic to look at it before buying it.

Above 150K, i know at least two 3 instances where Honda suffered engine issues. Not Odyssey, but on Accord 4 cylinder version. All of them serviced exclusively at dealer and were mainly highway driven. highest one was at 250K, issues with 2 pistons (don't know the details, my friend who lives in Philadelphia got into this issue). Others, major leaks and was too many other issues which made it head ache to keep it running. Kind of like German cars from starting of their life.

Most of the time, it run fine if it is maintained properly. Fluid changes at right time, belt replacements at proper interval etc. Just like parmm said, check it with a mechanic. Also <2006 models, there was some recall on transmission. Google it for details. Forgot what it was exactly.

If price is an issue, than you have to do what you have to do. EX-L with nav and DVD is a loaded vehicle. Are there others with less miles, but maybe at EX trim?

I assume you need a minivan because you got a family and kids. It would suck if the car was the breakdown on your way to Disneyland.

I drive a 210K mile car to work by myself. But I want something "better" for the entire family.

As already noted, depends on the care it has had. I expect mine to go way, way past 200K and won't be scared of it at that point, but I know every last thing it has had done to it since brand new.

Understand that the more miles you have, the more likely you are to meet this criteria. Personally I would not spend that much money on a car with that many miles. I agree with the comment to look for a less feature-filled model with fewer miles.
NAV? Go buy a portable unit for under $100. The maps on the '06 are likely 9 years old and I believe expensive to update, as opposed to the cost of a portable with free or cheap map updates. I paid under $100 for a unit with free quarterly updates for life.
DVD? Same as above. There are good portable systems for not a lot of money. A lot cheaper to replace these than to fix built-in units.

Thank you all!

I'm going to scratch this one off the list. Considering I'll be trading in a vehicle that needs repairs nearly every month, I think it's too much of a risk. I'll be using the van to tote my boys around town and into the city so I need something reliable. I found a 2005 ex-l with only 85k miles so I'm going to look at it this weekend. It doesn't have NAV or a dvd but no biggie. I have a garmin (which badly needs an update) and I'm fine with getting an aftermarket dvd player put in. I thought the built in NAV looked nice, but it sounds like it would be more of a pain than it's worth. Thank you again for your input!

For the most part I remember a click and Clack program saying there is no such thing as too many miles but if the condition of the car becomes unsafe to drive then that's when it's time to sell or junkthe vehicle. In theory cars get more fuel efficient and more safe as the years go on

Until 08, when it was integrated with the rear view mirror in the non-navi EX-L and up. Moot point since post mentions an 05, but thought I'd throw it in there.

What year?

What is high mileage for a Honda Odyssey?

Many have reported getting upwards of 250,000 miles of service out of their Odysseys. And there are others who've reported far higher numbers and say an Odyssey can last up to 300,000 miles easily. Judging from these reports, it's reasonable to expect 250,000 or even 300,000 miles from your Honda Odyssey.

What is the most common problem with Honda Odyssey?

From research and data pulled from complaints aggregators such as carcomplaints.com, we found these problems to be widespread among Odyssey vehicles..
Engine Misfiring issues. ... .
Torque Converter Problems. ... .
Malfunctioning brake system. ... .
Electric Sliding Door..
Warped Front Brakes..
Transmission Issues..
Honda Sensing Issues..

What is the most reliable Honda Odyssey year?

Opt for the 2017 Honda Odyssey when you want the best year for the reliable minivan. You will be hard-pressed to find any significant problem. While the 2019 and 2020 Honda Odyssey are excellent choices, the 2021 model has improved forward collision avoidance and a near-flawless record.

Which minivan lasts the longest?

The most reliable minivan is the Honda Odyssey. The Odyssey has above-average cargo capacity for its class with 32.8 cubic feet of space behind the third row and 88.8 cubic feet of space behind the second-row seats when the third-row seats are folded down.
