Your Local Garden Tool Sharpening Experts

We all own a piece of gardening equipment that has been neglected for a little bit too long. Equipment we can help you with include (but is not limited to):

  • Secateurs
  • Garden Shears
  • Axes / Hatchets
  • Shovels
  • Mower Blades

Our Process

We give all garden equipment a thorough wash with a wire brush, removing as much dirt and rust as possible. We then service as needed with the appropriate amount of lubrication. Your tools will be returned to you easier than ever to use and looking a lot less neglected.

If you wish to take things into your own hands, we recommend soaking your tools in vinegar overnight, then working them over with a wire brush of your own. This will remove an astonishing amount of rust and bring back their original shine.

How We Sharpen

We'll select the best whetstone for each blade by looking at the material, quality, and condition of the blade and carefully sharpen it, constantly fine tuning to get the perfect finish.

We use Japanese water stones and diamond stones to get the best finish. And we also use a Sorby Pro Edge electric belt sharpener that uses different grades of belt to bring the blade back into a condition where it can be finished by hand. This also allows us to get the perfect angle on the cutting edge.

Working this way removes the minimal amount of steel necessary and ensures a stronger, finer edge that will last longer.

Our expertise and skill in sharpening will bring out the best cutting ability possible from your blade. Often we find the blades cut better after sharpening than they did new.

How To Use Our Sharpening Service

If you're local to Castle Cary just drop your tools off at our shop. Here's how to find us.

If you're not local send your tools to us by post. We recommend that you use one of Royal Mail's tracked services as we don't want your favourite tools not to arrive safely.

Please make sure that you pack them in such a way that they can't injure anybody in transit - tough cardboard tightly bound with tape should work.

We'll then sharpen them and send them back to you by Royal Mail 48 tracked service. Please allow a few days for us to get the job done.

If you think your tools might be beyond hope, please send us a photo and we can have a chat about your options.

Can garden tools be sharpened?

Sharpening Digging Tools and Garden Hoes Tools with a clean, sharp edge will cut into the soil with much less effort. To sharpen spades, trowels and so on, pass a metal file over the edges of the blade. Keep the angle shallow and work your way along both the front and the back of the blade.

Can I sharpen my garden shears?

Take a hand-powered diamond file or sharpener of an appropriate size and medium coarseness, such as the Felco Sharpening Tool from Amazon (opens in new tab), and match it to the angle of the blade. It's important to note that the cutting blade on garden shears is beveled, so it's usually only sharp on one side.
