Apple Pay has helped me a ton in moving away from plain old cash with the tap-to-pay feature, but I still wasn’t sure if Walmart accepted it.

I had heard of Walmart Pay before, and I didn’t want to end up at the checkout with no way to pay if they didn’t take Apple Pay.

So I decided to do some research beforehand by checking out what Walmart accepted as payment online on their web pages and by talking to other Walmart shoppers.

I finally got my answer which should put into perspective Walmart’s payment policies and what you can and cannot use.

Walmart doesn’t take Apple Pay at their stores, and they only have Walmart Pay as a contactless payment method.

Can I Use Apple Pay At Walmart?

Unfortunately, Apple Pay isn’t accepted at Walmart, and you won’t be able to pay for your purchases using the contactless payment system.

The biggest reason is that they are big enough to survive even if they don’t accept Apple Pay because they can take the hit of losing customers.

Instead of charging fees to the consumer, Apple places this charge on the retailer, in this case, Walmart, which can go to around 2% of the total amount.

Walmart doesn’t want to pay the fee because it could cost their margins a lot, so they don’t accept Apple Pay.

They also have another incentive not to use Apple Pay and instead make their customers sign up for their own payment service called Walmart Pay.

The cynics among Walmart customers say that Walmart cannot get any user data from Apple Pay but can do so if people use Walmart’s payment services.

Whatever the reason, at the end of the day, Walmart doesn’t accept Apple Pay, and you’ll have to use Walmart Pay instead if you want to pay contactless with your phone.

What Payment Methods Do They Accept?

While Walmart doesn’t take Apple Pay, they accept many other payment methods, including Walmart Pay.

The other methods include:

• Your regular credit or debit cards.
• Walmart gift cards
• PayPal Cash Cards
• EBT cards and more

Walmart wants you to use Walmart Pay since it is the only phone-based contactless payment system they accept.

They do not accept Google Pay either, and all of it is in a bid to make you start using Walmart Pay.

Paying Contactless At Walmart

To pay contactless at Walmart, you’ll need to install the Walmart Pay app on your phone and add your cards.

It is pretty simple to do; in fact, my friend managed to set up the app right before checkout when he found out the store doesn’t take Apple Pay.

To set up Walmart Pay:

1. Download the Walmart Pay app from your device’s app store and launch it.
2. Go to Services > Walmart Pay.
3. Follow the instructions that appear.
4. Create a Walmart account if you don’t have one, or log in with your account if you have one.
5. Add your credit or debit card.
6. Tap Got It when the app finishes setup.

Once this is done, you can use the app at checkout and scan a QR code to pay for any purchases that you’ve made.

Where Else Can I Use Walmart Pay?

Walmart Pay is extremely limited regarding where you can use it since you can only use it at Walmart’s brick-and-mortar stores.

This means Walmart’s online app or website stores are a no-go, which makes sense since your Walmart account already has your payment information.

The Walmart Pay app is just there to store your payment information and doesn’t have most of the features Apple Pay has, like Tap to pay or tighter security over credit card information.

But the positive about this is that you won’t be charged any extra fees for paying over Walmart Pay since it just stores your cards and doesn’t handle the payments.

Is Walmart Pay Safe?

Walmart Pay is pretty safe, just like most payment apps, but I suggest you only use it if you go to Walmart often.

The app asks for a passcode every time you access your card information or make payments, so you’re safe if you don’t give out this code.

All communication involving your payment information is done with industry-standard encryption, and your card information is never sent through the internet.

Keep the Walmart Pay app updated, and you won’t run into any issues, and your cards will be kept secure.

Apple Pay Anyday

The easiest way to find out if a store accepts Apple Pay is to look for the Apple Pay Accepted decal that is usually found on store windows or near the checkout counter.

You can also look for a tap-to-pay point-of-sale system to know if a store accepts Apple Pay.

I would always recommend Apple Pay when paying contactless, but in the case of stores like Walmart that don’t have it, their own solution might be your only alternative.

Make sure that none of these other payment services have extra fees, though, and if it is a store you frequent or a service you use a lot, those fees can accumulate and become a significant amount.
