Can you paint over semi gloss with satin

There is an abundance of paint finishes to talk about. You have got matte, Gloss, super glossy, sheen, satin, and what not! Each of them gives a super unique look. Today in this article, I have covered the most sought answer for "Can you paint Satin over Gloss?"

Before jumping to the answer, let me brief you on what is gloss and satin paint.

What is Satin paint?

A satin paint in texture is silky and smooth. It leaves behind a pearl-like shine finish when it dries off. A satin finish reflects much more light than other paint finishes. Satin paint does not come off even if you wash it off the wall. And stands up well to washing. Satin paint is good to use in bathrooms, kitchen, kid's room, or even throughout the house.

What is Gloss paint?

Gloss paint used to be an oil-based paint in the past, but nowadays, the gloss paint is waterbased with less amount of VOC. It is widely used for traditional wood painting. It is used indoors, with windows, wooden works, furniture, etc.; it is very reflective and leaves a sheen effect on the surface of the painted area.

The thing with satin finish is that it gives you a luxurious touch to your rooms. It is really recommendable to paint it on the interior walls of your rooms. In comparison, gloss paints are easier to clean off from the walls. Satin paints win for me as they can hide every imperfection on the surface, unlike other paint types. So like many others, even I prefer choosing Satin over Gloss paints. The satin finish is preferred for kitchens, bathrooms, kid's rooms, and many more.

Now the answer to the day's question is YES, you can paint any kind of paint over the other kind of paint, but there are few things to keep in mind about that. While you are painting the house, ensure that before painting over the previous point, note if it is an oil-based paint or a water-based paint. Let me give you a golden tip, and It is always oil over water, not water over oil. If your paint was oil-based before covering, then do not use water-based paint.

Before covering, clean the wall with an oil-based primer. Then you can paint over it by painting double coats of your new paint.

I recently started painting (satin) over a room that was previously painted with a semi-gloss.  I don’t know what I was thinking, but I just started painting without any surface prep.  By the time I came to my senses, I had already put most of the first coat on.   After it finished drying, I dragged my nails across, and of course it scratched the paint off.

I was wondering if there is some way of getting out of sanding this paint off, deglossing the original coat, and starting over.  Might there be some kind of primer I could still apply over this first coat and get adequate adhesion?  Any other ideas?  Please don’t make me sand it off…………

Thanks.

The gentleman at lowes mixed me semi-gloss paint and primer instead of Satin. After dried it was to shinny and did not notice it was semi-gloss until I was painting the bass boards.

Can I paint satin paint and prime without priming first?

I can't speak to Valspar paints, however, a good quality 100% Acrylic Satin should adhere with no problem while the semi-gloss coating is fresh. You should contact the manufacturer online rather than ask a box-store clerk.

The only problem you might have is that the semi-gloss may try to complete its 30 day surface cure underneath the satin. You might want to wait if you can.

By the way, there is no such thing as primer and paint in one.

You can do that but a quick scuff sand would be the best for max adhesion. Just remember that a surface should be clean dull and dry and paint will stick. Also all 100% acrylic paints are self priming and nothing replaces a good primer.

I would just quickly scuff sand to make sure. Satin is similar enough to semi-gloss that i doubt there would be a problem anyway.

There would be no difference between applying a "third" coat of satin over semi-gloss and applying a third coat of semi. As long as the last coat of semi is dry to recoat, have at it. Your satin will probably have a bit more sheen than normal due to the semi undercoat, you might want to do a fourth, or second coat of satin.

If you are painting over a glossy surface with another coat of gloss, satin or eggshell paint, you can lightly sand and clean the surface and paint it without having to use a primer.

Can I paint satin over gloss without sanding?

Yes, you can put satin paint over gloss as long as you sand the gloss to knock off the sheen. The satin will have no trouble sticking to the painted surface. You could also use a liquid de-glosser to prep gloss walls for repainting if you don't want to sand them.

Paint the second coat using a side-to-side method. Paint all the walls until it looks even. After the paint dries, touch up any areas that are needed. And that is how you can put satin paint over semi-gloss.

How can I paint over semi

If you want to update semi-gloss painted walls but don't want to sand and prime; or, if lead-based semi-gloss walls prevents you from sanding, it is possible to paint over semi-gloss walls with a satin-based paint without sanding or priming.
