HOW TO RELIEVE SENSITIVE TEETH AFTER WHITENING

  1. Brush your teeth before whitening not after whitening. Brushing right after whitening will further open pores on exposed dentin and create sensitivity. It can also damage your enamel since some bleaching agents are slightly acidic. Let your teeth recover afterwards.
  2. Use a Desensitizing Gel to calm your the nerves in your teeth prior to whitening. For the most relief, you should apply the gel to your teeth for 10 to 30 minutes before bleaching using the same bleaching trays you got from your dentist and rinse afterwards. Ideally, the gel should contain both 5% potassium nitrate and fluoride. We are able to prescribe specifically designed desensitizing gels like UltraEZ™, Desensitize!, and Relief™, but in a pinch you can also try using in the trays a desensitizing toothpaste that contains 5% potassium nitrate. Using toothpaste instead of the commercial gels may also be a more cost-friendly method.
  3. Whiten as directed.
  4. Rinse out your mouth thoroughly after bleaching with water. Although bleaching companies try to make products that are pH balanced, many end up being slightly acidic. Getting your oral pH back to normal lets your teeth begin to recover.
  5. Use your finger (or q-tip) to gently apply to your teeth one of the Calcium based desensitizing toothpastes. Let the paste set for a few minutes and then spit thoroughly; do not rinse for at least 30 minutes following application. By gently coating your teeth with a product like MI Paste or Colgate’s Pro-Argin Toothpaste, you will plug up open pores on your teeth and reduce sensitivity. Additionally, the remineralizing effects of these pastes help to improve whitening.

WHAT CAUSES TOOTH SENSITIVITY AFTER WHITENING?

Sensitive teeth after bleaching happens for two reasons:

  1. Bleaching molecules penetrate into your teeth increasing blood flow and pressure in the tooth pulp causing mild pulpitis. Although diffusion into your teeth helps amplify whitening effects since chromophore molecules in your tooth dentin can be broken up by hydrogen peroxide, the increased pressure irritates the tooth nerve slightly and makes your teeth more sensitive to stimuli in general. Everyone responds differently, generally these symptoms disappear in 24-48 hours.
  2. Increased tooth porosity and removal of the protective protein layer on the surface of your teeth. The protein pellicle layer is important in keeping the pores in exposed dentin closed off from the oral environment.  All whitening products must strip off this protein layer in order to dissolve surface stains. This will open up pores in exposed dentin and cause sensitivity.

5 Tips for Using Teeth Whitening Strips | What You Need to Know

Can you brush your teeth after whitening

Teeth whitening strips are fantastic ways for us to improve our smiles at home. While they are not quite as effective as a teeth whitening procedure conducted by a dentist or hygienist, they still can work wonders. However, there are right and wrong ways to use these strips, which is why our New Jersey dental team has detailed five useful tips for using teeth whitening strips. They are as follows.

  1. Never use teeth whitening strips before brushing your teeth, but do not use toothpaste at this time. Before you apply white strips, it is critical that you brush your teeth with a wet toothbrush (without fluoridated toothpaste, or without toothpaste at all). This will allow the pores in your teeth to open, thereby making them more receptive to the whitening agent in the whitening strips. Once you brush with a wet toothbrush, rinse your mouth out. After you apply the strips and take them off after some time, then you can brush and floss as normal.
  2. Use the teeth whitening strips every day, but do not use them in excess of what the product instructs. To get the best results, you must use your teeth whitening strips daily, however, using them more often or for a longer period of time than specified in the instructions can ultimately result in erosion of your teeth enamel, which can lead to sensitivity and other damage.
  3. Do not touch your gums with the whitening strips. The whitening agent in whitening strips can be harmful to your gums. Particularly, this agent can damage the soft tissue in your gums, which can lead to a wide array of oral health issues down the road.
  4. Apply whitening strips evenly. Of course, whitening strips will only whiten the areas in which they are placed. To avoid uneven whitening, ensure that you take the time to properly place the strips so that your teeth are evenly whitened.
  5. After applying the white strips, ensure that you avoid certain foods and beverages for a certain period of time. Coffee, wine, and other flavored/colored beverages should be avoided for at least a couple of hours after applying. The pores in your teeth will still be open and receptive to whatever you put in your mouth for some time after applying whitening strips, so you should work to avoid eating or drinking any dark-colored foods or drinks.

After Whitening: Remove the tray and rinse off your teeth. Brush any remaining gel away. Brush, floss and continue routine dental cleaning. You may initially notice white splotches on teeth following removal of tray. This is typically cause by dehydration of the teeth and should diminish within an hour.

Should you brush your teeth before or after whitening them?

We recommend brushing your teeth beforehand for any type of whitening. This is to ensure that the plaque (the sticky surface layer of the teeth) is removed and that any whitening agents contained in the strips or gel are in close contact with the teeth.

You can brush your teeth after the treatment, but you should avoid colored toothpaste, gels, or mouthwashes for the first 48 hours because this could discolor your teeth. We often recommend the brand Sensodyne to clean the teeth because this helps reduce discomfort.
