At one point in my life, my favorite aunt decided to place glassware on top of a hot stovetop. Well, as you might imagine, it shattered. Oh, what a nightmare it was! That said, it’s not uncommon to be unsure of whether or not Pyrex can go in the oven with extreme temps.

The good news is that yes, Pyrex can go in the oven. The key is to be smart when doing so. Here are a few simple tips to ensure no damage or breakage occurs when you place your Pyrex in the oven.

*Keep in mind that the original Pyrex designed before 1998 is thermal-shock resistant, so you don’t need to worry about potential shattering.

Avoid Sudden Temperature Changes

Sudden temperature changes can reap big (negative) results with glassware, such as shattering entirely. So what should you do?

  • Never add liquid to a piping hot Pyrex dish.
  • Never place your hot Pyrex dish onto a wet or cold surface
  • Never place your hot Pyrex on top of metal, countertops, or sinks
  • Do not handle a hot Pyrex dish with a wet cloth, towel, or oven mitt

Instead, find a safe spot for your Pyrex to cool off, such as a cooling rack or potholder. It must be cooled entirely before being washed or placed in the fridge or freezer.

Preheat Before Inserting

When baking with Pyrex, it is essential to preheat the oven before inserting the dish. Now, this might be confusing, considering a Pyrex shouldn’t be around a sudden temperature change. What gives?

Well, while an oven is preheating, there is a great deal of radiant heat being output into the oven. This intense amount of heat is designed to increase the temperature of objects inside. Placing the Pyrex during this stage would result in excessive exposure to intense radiant heat.

On the other hand, placing the Pyrex after preheating will limit exposure to intense heat. Instead of the radiant heat being continuous, it will be in shorter bursts to keep the oven at the desired temperature.

Never Use Pyrex On or Under Flames

If you look back to my (fun) family story, you’d see that flames + Pyrex don’t mix. Do yourself a favor and keep your Pyrex away from any direct heat sources such as a stovetop, broiler, toaster oven, or grill.

Add a Little Moisture

If you’re going to bake something that you know will release some moisture while cooking, it’s important to add a dash of liquid before inserting it into the oven. This will ensure no shock to the Pyrex when moisture hits the glass from the ingredients.

Ditch Heat-Concentrating Materials

Sometimes, materials such as browning wrappers can be used in baking. But they should never be used when you’re working with Pyrex. Pyrex should not come into contact with any type of heat-concentrating materials.

Never Heat Alone

Last but not least, your Pyrex should never be preheated or heated with little or nothing inside of it. This can lead to disaster. Always make sure you have your ingredients inside, ready to go, before placing your Pyrex in a preheated oven.

FAQs

Needless to say, Pyrex can be a little finicky when it comes to heat. That said, it’s no secret that plenty of people have additional questions when it comes to whether or not Pyrex can go in an oven. Let’s take a closer look at some of these important questions!

Can Pyrex go in the oven at 350?

Yes, Pyrex can go in the oven at 350F.

Can Pyrex go in the oven at 400?

Yes, it can go in a 400F oven, too!

Can Pyrex go in a 450-degree oven?

Here’s where it gets tricky. Some people believe that Pyrex can handle 450F, while others are wary. That said, most people will opt for a metal pan at 450F to be on the safe side.

Final Thoughts

Pyrex is a trusted piece of cookware in plenty of kitchens, but it must be treated with care around heat sources. If you’re going to stick Pyrex in the oven, make sure the oven is preheated, and you have a safe spot to let it cool.

Do you use Pyrex in the oven? What’s your favorite recipe?

I have been a lover of sweets since day one. This led me on a self-taught baking journey starting at the age of 13. It's been over 10 years since the start of my baking adventures, and I’ve learned a lot along the way. Now, people rave about my delectable treats, whether it’s a chocolate cake or a strawberry crepe.

How do I know if my Pyrex is oven

Pyrex is oven-safe up to 425 degrees. However, direct contact with heating elements can cause the glass to shatter or break. Pyrex is not oven-safe when used under the broiler or in a toaster oven.

Can Pyrex go in the oven at 400?

But rest easy—vintage Pyrex dishes are oven-safe. As long as you follow the same guidelines above, vintage Pyrex is A-OK to go in the oven and can be used in oven temperatures up to 425ºF (and skip the broiler).
