Best dental insurance for wisdom teeth removal reddit

Which one you need depends on your state and the nature of the extraction. Generally wisdom teeth are a dental insurance issue.

Dental PPO plans that cover all services, not just cleaning and filling, will be north of $30/month and require up to to 12 months of waiting. DHMO plans, not legal in most states, skip the waiting period but cover fewer Services and even fewer dentists.

In some states and situations, a severely inflamed or cracked wisdom tooth can be removed by an Oral Surgeon under medical insurance. This is rare but solves many of dental insurances problems.

Best dental insurance for wisdom teeth removal reddit

So basically I went in to have my wisdom teeth removed and was under the impression that most of it would be covered by the insurance. I was never quoted the actual price that I would be paying after the dental assistant contacted my insurance. I was mostly sedated for the whole process and couldn't remember jack shit any way. Anyhow, my bill came out to $2400 after the insurance covered $2600 of it. There is no way in hell I can pay that off right away in one full payment given my other living expenses (rent, bills, other bills, netflix). Do you think I should contact the insurance about it or the doctor's assistant directly? I mean I could take out a loan from the bank. I just find the whole thing to be bizarre and expensive for the removal of wisdom teeth. Any help is greatly appreciated.

I'm a grad student with a student health insurance plan and no dental. I have put it off long enough but now my wisdom teeth are causing problems (cheek biting in my sleep leading to painful infections) and I need them out. Before I call around to get quotes, was wondering if others have recommendations, if there are dentists in the area who work with students and/or offer this surgery at a good relative cost. I don't routinely seek dental care so I do not know how much variability there is, sorry if this is a dumb question.

The teeth are fully erupted by the way, so I think (from my initial Googling) this means it will be less expensive than if they were impacted.

Just trying to figure out if I need $600 or $6000 for this...or if I just rip them out at home (mostly kidding about that part)

Thanks!

I just got back from the dentist. I need 3 fillings, which my insurance does not cover. $350-$380 each. I need 3 crowns because I apparently grind my teeth at night and I ruined a few teeth, and they absolutely need to be the expensive crowns, which my insurance does not cover. $1,345 each. I need a mouth guard to prevent further grinding which my insurance does not cover. $275. And I need my wisdom teeth out. I didn’t even ask how much that would be. Overall it will be $5,400 for everything not including the wisdom teeth.

I’m pretty pissed off at myself for somehow choosing an insurance that doesn’t even cover fillings but I can switch my insurance during open enrollment this year. I don’t care how much the premium is at this point, I just want an insurance that will actually cover what I need. What’s the best the state has to offer?

So my wisdom tooth decided to say hello. Its not painful right now but I think in a month it's getting there. Since I had no problems for a year with the wisdom teeth, I decided to not buy dental insurance (and will have to wait 6-7 months to enroll myself). Now, I don't know what to do.

  1. If I go ahead without insurance, how much should I expect to pay out of pocket?

  2. How/what insurance should I buy and can I just pay and start using the insurance?

I have general insurance, I'm not sure if they will cover it.

Location: Indiana - Tippecanoe County.

Long story short but my mom never got my wisdom teeth removed when I was a teenager. (When it was covered by insurance). Now I’m 22 and my wisdom teeth are impacted, which now means they are not covered by my insurance anymore.

Does anyone have any similar experiences and figured out what to do next? My mouth is killing me and I’m afraid I could have to go into emergency surgery soon.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Edit: Impacted wisdom teeth removal are a lot more expensive than regular removals. I can’t afford a payment plan of $2500+ really in my financial situation. Impacted removals are typically not covered by insurance.

Dental plans really aren't insurance, they are discount plans. I find that most people overestimate the value of dental plans. For example, at dentalplans.com you can find plans that cover oral surgery (wisdom teeth removal) that cost $150/year or so. If you need 4 impacted teeth removed you could sign up for one of those, pay the $150 and get an OK discount.

To have oral surgery to remove impacted wisdom teeth generally costs between $200-600 per tooth removed with the biggest factor being local anesthesia vs general anesthesia (being put under). Having 4 impacted teeth removed will cost you between $600-1,100 depending on where you live and the dentist you find (seriously, shop around). With a plan you could get around a 60% discount so if it costs $1,100 with the plan it would cost you $580 or so for a total savings of $520 or 47.3% discount.

Edit: One way you could save money also is talking to the dentist when you are shopping around and ask them about non-insurance pricing. The dental system in the USA suffers from much of the same issues as the health system in that billing the 'insurance'/discount plans costs a lot of time, paperwork, and effort for the practice to get paid. You might get a 50% or so discount right off the top just for not making them go through insurance. A lot of dentists are also very willing to work with patients to make the treatment affordable.

My last point is if you find an oral surgeon that ONLY does oral surgery (i.e. no general dentistry like cleanings and cavities) they generally cost a lot less.

Is it cheaper to get all wisdom teeth removed?

It's also more cost-effective to get all four teeth removed at once, so it's better for your body and your wallet to lose all four wisdom teeth at the same time. Before your wisdom teeth extraction, your oral surgeon will perform a thorough oral examination to determine the size and position of the teeth.

Can I get MC for wisdom tooth extraction?

Depending on your dentist, most patients will typically be given 5 days of MC after a wisdom tooth surgery. If multiple teeth are removed in a single sitting, days will be given if required.

Does German insurance cover wisdom teeth removal?

Yes, as part of Germany's healthcare system, German health insurance companies cover basic dental care, such as yearly check-ups, including descaling your teeth, simple plastic fillings for frontal teeth, and wisdom teeth removal.

How much does it cost to get rotten wisdom teeth removed?

The bottom line Having wisdom teeth removed can cost between $200 and $1,100 per tooth. Impacted teeth cost more since they're harder to remove. But even though the cost can be high, you shouldn't delay the procedure if your dentist advises it. The surgery gets more complicated — and expensive — the older you are.
