Azo test strips turns purple after 5 minutes

Hi
This is my first time using at home UTI test strips. These are Azo brand tests.
It says the top square area is for leukocytes and the bottom is for nitrites.

To read nitrites results, I had to read in 1 minute and for leukocyte, in 2 minutes.
The pic is after 2 minutes and the bottom square is clearly negative but top one (leukocyte) looks positive. I waited some more time and it has turned even darker (purple) now.

Should I be concerned? It’s a holiday today and I meet my MFM doctor tomorrow. I hope it doesn’t get worse. I do have pelvic pain since last morning and some difficulty passing urine.

PS: I’m high risk due to pprom in my last pregnancy and previous losses. Hence, concerned about it.
Thank you for looking 🙏🏼

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the signs and symptoms of a UTI?

The most common UTI symptoms are:

  • Pain or painful urination
  • Frequent need to urinate
  • Burning sensation while urinating
  • Bladder spasm
  • Lower back pain
  • Fever

If you experience any of these symptoms, immediately consult your physician. Learn more about common UTI symptoms and about diagnosing a UTI.

What does a positive result mean?

When used properly, the AZO Test Strips home UTI test can detect that you may have a urinary tract infection (UTI). AZO Test Strips test for both leukocytes (white blood cells or WBC’s) and nitrite. These tests performed together are more effective for detecting a UTI than testing for nitrite alone.

What should I tell my doctor if I get a positive result?

You should say, “My AZO Test Strips UTI test is positive for nitrite and/or WBCs (leukocytes)”.

Will common foods, alcohol, or medications affect my test results?

Most substances will not interfere with the test. However, some medications can affect the color of your urine, making it difficult to properly match the colors. For example, if you take more than 500 mg of Vitamin C in 24 hours, you may obtain a false negative nitrite result. The drug tetracycline may also cause a false negative WBC result. If you are having difficulty reading the test strip or getting a negative result while experiencing UTI symptoms, contact your healthcare professional immediately.

How do I interpret the results?

Use the following table to determine what your test results mean. Remember, they are only one piece of information your doctor needs in order to treat you. RESULTS Recommendations Leukocytes (LEU) Nitrite (NIT) Negative Negative Results suggest no sign of a UTI. When trace LEU occurs or if you have symptoms, test again the following day with your first morning urine using a new test strip. If you get another trace LEU or if you still have symptoms, consult your physician. Negative or trace Positive Results suggest a sign of a UTI. Consult your physician immediately. Positive Positive Results suggest a sign of a UTI. Consult your physician immediately. Positive Negative Results suggest a sign of a UTI. Repeat the test next time you urinate using a new test strip. Make sure to wash the genital area first. If LEU is still positive, consult your physician.

Can I use AZO test strips while taking AZO Urinary Pain Relief?

AZO Urinary Pain Relief contains phenazopyridine hydrochloride, an organic dye. This dye can interfere with test results making them harder to read.

Why is morning urine the best for testing?

Bacteria require time to convert nitrates to nitrites. Testing in the morning, assuming you have slept for at least four hours without urinating, allows the bacteria sufficient time to complete the conversion and provide a rich sample for testing.

If I am taking an antibiotic will it affect the UTI test?

Your healthcare professional may recommend that you test your urine again after completing the antibiotic treatment. If the AZO Test Strips is positive, contact your healthcare professional and always follow instructions for taking an antibiotic even if the strip result is negative.

Can I use AZO Test Strips during my menstrual cycle?

This is not recommended because traces of menses can produce a false positive WBC (Leukocyte) result.

Do AZO Test Strips detect STDs, HIV, Cancer, Protein, Yeast or sugar in the urine?

AZO Test Strips will not identify anything other than the presence of WBCs (Leukocytes) and nitrites in the urine.

What are the limits of the UTI test?

Under certain conditions, you may get a negative result even though you have a UTI. If your infection is caused by bacteria that does not change nitrate to nitrite, if your diet does not include nitrates, or if the urine has not been held in the bladder long enough (at least 4 hours), you will get a negative nitrite result. If there are only a small number of WBCs (Leukocytes) in the urine, you may get a negative WBC result. Always contact your healthcare professional when UTI symptoms persist.

What does purple mean on a UTI test strip?

Detecting nitrites The second line of the Clarify diagnostic strip detects the absence, presence or abundance of nitrites in the urine as reflected in the color change from white to purple. A white color denotes no detection of nitrites and deep purple is consistent with elevated nitrites.

Can you read UTI test after 2 minutes?

After two minutes, you can match the color of your test strip to the color block included with your kit. The color will tell you if you tested positive or negative for a UTI.

What does it mean when your leukocytes are positive but Nitrite is negative?

Leukocytes in the urine without nitrite If the test for leukocyte esterase is positive but finds no nitrite, an infection may still be present. The test is particular to certain bacterial enzymes, which means it can pick up specific bacterial infections with more certainty.

Can AZO cause false positive UTI test?

In addition, false-positive results for nitrite will occur if the dipstick is exposed to air or phenazopyridine, a common prescription and OTC product (e.g., Pyridium, AZO) used as a urinary analgesic.
