Housing Choice Voucher Program (Formerly Section 8) The Housing Choice Voucher Program (formerly Section 8) is a federally assistance program that offers subsidized housing options in the private market to low-income individuals, families, seniors, and persons with disabilities. Program funding is supplied by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). Voucher holders generally pay 30 to 40 percent of their annual income for rent. Individuals are free to choose any housing that meets the requirements. Voucher holders can find available units here.
