Allison transmission wont shift out of first gear

Yesterday we went mudding and the truck was fine & this morning i was on my way somewhere and it was running perfectly fine then i out it in reverse and out of nowhere the truck didn't want to shift out of first gear anymore. there's only a certain speed limit i can go.
My car has an automatic transmission.

Allison transmission wont shift out of first gear

This may be a sign of low transmission fluid or a faulty transmission control solenoid. As you know, automatic transmissions use pressurized hydraulic fluid to change gears. Every time a gear change is required, the car’s computer activates a transmission solenoid, which directs transmission fluid into the valve body to engage the correct gear. When this is faulty or not working properly, this can cause a delay in gear shifting or in some cases cause the car to not shift at all. This type of problem is amplified any time the transmission is low on fluid creating a drop in hydraulic pressure.

This may also suggest a failing speed sensor. The transmission speed sensor is a magnetic sensor that provides this information, allowing the transmission to shift smoothly. The sensor counts the internal number of revolutions of the transmission and transmits that information to the transmission control unit, where the data is used to determine the rotational speed. As the rotation increases, the control unit directs the changing of gears. When this is not working properly, this may cause the transmission to shift erratically or in some cases not at all. I would recommend having an expert from YourMechanic come to your location to take the car for a test drive to more specifically determine the cause for this.

I am trying to locate the fuse boxes in my truck. To explain, the transmission will not shift out of 1st gear. I think that perhaps a fuse has blown and I want to check it out. However, I'm not sure if there is only one fuse box in my truck. I am assuming it is inside the cab and under the steering wheel or it might be under the hood somewhere. Would you please tell me where it is and how to access it? Thanks.

Hello there, thank you for asking about your 2006 GMC Sierra 1500 HD. If your vehicle will not shift out of first gear, the problem is not the fuses. The problem could be a shift solenoid, but more than likely, you have an internal transmission issue that will require rebuilding or replacing the unit. The 1-2 shift valve may be the problem. A professional, such as one from YourMechanic, can diagnose your shifting problem.

What causes a transmission not to shift out of first gear?

You Have a Stuck Solenoid Your car's computer sends electrical signals to the solenoids, opening them up allowing transmission fluid to flow through them and allowing the gears to shift. However, sometimes these solenoids can get stuck and can prevent your car from shifting gears entirely.

What would cause an Allison Transmission to not shift in gear?

Transmission slip — If TCM receives a signal that the transmission is slipping, it'll prevent the transmission from shifting into that gear range. Check transmission operation; if it seems to be working properly, check the appropriate sensor inputs. If the transmission is slipping, repair as needed.

How do I reset my shift Allison Transmission?

Press and hold the MODE button for 10 seconds to clear both active and inactive codes.

What would cause a transmission not to shift?

Over time, dirt, debris and other tiny particles can accumulate in the transmission fluid, affecting its fluid properties. This can cause the vehicle to die when you shift into drive or reverse, allow a loss of power, transmission slip, rough shifts or even prevent the vehicle from shifting into gear at all.
