2 Brake Light On problem of the 2016 Mazda CX-5

Failure Date: 01/12/2021

Within the last month the electronic parking brake self engaged 3 times when I started my car I noticed the brake light on. I never engage the parking brake when parked in the driveway. I was able to disengage it twice, but the last time it would not disengage. I followed all the steps listed in the car manual, but nothing worked. I had to drive with the electronic parking brake on to the dealership. Upon inspection the service department confirmed it was an internal electronic failure.

3 Brake Light On problem of the 2016 Mazda CX-5

Failure Date: 04/25/2020

My car was parked in a level garage overnight and the next day after driving for about 5 minutes the electronic parking brake (epb) light started flashing on both the dashboard and the epb control lever and the brake light warning light was lit. It seemed to be driving fine, and I never engaged the parking brake so I thought I may have done so accidentally. I pulled over, turned the car off and tried to disengage the parking brake but it just kept flashing. I took it to my garden city Mazda dealership to service it for the daytime running lights recall, so I told them about this problem as well. While waiting for the appointment, some days the lights stayed off and some days came on. At the dealership, I paid $140 for a diagnostic and was told that the parking brake module shorted out and needed to be replaced, at a cost of over $900. I asked if there was a chance my brakes would malfunction or if I could drive the car safely and was told the brakes would not be affected, so due to the cost I opted to not have it repaired. This car is less than 5 years old and I should not have to pay for this safety defect. My odometer reads approximately 55,000. Now I have to drive around with a very distracting red parking brake warning light flashing on and off constantly and my brake warning light lit. This distraction is an additional safety concern. I'm not sure if garden city Mazda reported this issue to the manufacturer, but apparently Mazda is aware of this issue but no safety recall has been made. Why? I feel at the very least, even if no safety recall, that customers should have this issue repaired at no cost as soon as they report it to Mazda. Perhaps abc's 7 on your side, pix 11's arnold diaz/what a shame, nbc's better get baquero, or any consumer investigative unit would be interested in featuring this problem - before someone gets killed! please help! ty.

4 Brake Light On problem of the 2016 Mazda CX-5

Failure Date: 04/09/2020

The electric parking brake (epb) has malfunctioned. The car was parked in a level garage overnight, without the parking brake engaged. When the car was turned on the epb light came on and is flashing, as well as the brake light warning. The warning lights remain illuminated on the dash even after multiple restarts. The emergency brake is not engaged and the car seems to drive fine. However I have no emergency brake now, which is obviously a significant safety issue.

5 Brake Light On problem of the 2016 Mazda CX-5

Failure Date: 09/08/2019

My wifes car is just over 3 years old, couple month out of warranty of coarse however the emergency parking brake light for no reason comes on and blinks when it does this it also blink the red light on the dash. It was only doing this at start up however now it seem to do it at random even while driving which is very scary to think your brakes could actually lockup. Called Mazda USA, and they said well it must be diagnosed by one of there dealership and even then would not probably consider covering any part of the bill which can run up to $1000. 00 for the epb module. This car has been 100% cared for all records barely 21. 000 miles, this is the 3rd faulty issue of something breaking on this car-1st- one of those expensive led lights burned out, 2nd electric seat motor burn out,and now this module and the customer rep states they are not at liberty to discuss if this was in fact a problem and safety issue . Please be safe and careful when you purchasing your Mazda Cx-5.

6 Brake Light On problem of the 2018 Mazda CX-5

Failure Date: 09/06/2019

While driving on a city street and there is a car stopped in front, I will start to brake lightly and then increase braking if needed. Three times the car has stopped itself with Mazda's "Smart city brake" feature. I had space to stop in time, but the car's scb takes over and violently brakes the car to a stop an increases the chance of a rear end collision from a car following me. This has happened 3 times. Every time I had control and could stop in time and the vehicle's algorithm says too close and stops the car violently, even if I am applying the brakes already. Unacceptable to have the scb feature this sensitive, and should not brake more if the driver is already applying the brakes.

7 Brake Light On problem of the 2016 Mazda CX-5

Failure Date: 11/03/2018

Ebrake would not disengage on the Mazda Cx-5 2016 gt with city brake and electronic e-brake at 36,100 miles during various parking locations scenarios. Vehicle would start normally at push of start button but the e-brake light would stay on in the flashing mode. Turn engine off/restarting would resolve the problem temporarily just to return to the same issue at random parking locations. Dealership suggested a replacement battery main 12 volt battery for $185+tax+installation. Battery replacement suggested based on a claim of low voltage measured at the e-brake switch located on the center console. There was no other solutions provided by the dealership for further testing/isolation of issue priir making a payment, to include confirmation that in fact the battery is the culprit. Utilizing an alternate/test battery could be a temporary testing solution. Payments were made as requested and the issue of the flashing e-brake light flashing/e-brake not disengaging is less apparent with 2 incidents 1 month after battery replacement. Incidents observed while in covered/uncovered parking scenarios, outside temperature oscillate from 75 to 92 f. Vehicle rear brakes were replaced under 5000 miles by dealership due to noises and premature wear. Vehicle also has a Mazda remote start system installed by dealership with a history of electrical failure of the a/c compressor. Documentation available for review.

9 Brake Light On problem of the 2014 Mazda CX-5

Failure Date: 07/28/2016

Abt 35k miles I began hearing intermittent sequels coming from rear of vehicle while driving. When I first mentioned this to Mazda service adviser, he said he did a complete diagnostic and car was fine. At abt 40-45k the intermittent squeals included grinding like a tin can noise, but there were no indicators that it was a break issue; noise was noticed more during driving not when I stopped and no service brake lights were on. If I accelerated or maneuvered my steering wheel I was able to get noise to stop. When I took my car in to Mazda for oil change I asked to also have brakes checked and adviser said he would do a complete diagnostic. He said brakes were in yellow and I could try to change my brake fluid? the noise, duration and occurrences increased to weekly and then daily. It was still intermittent and while driving forward and in reverse, not as much when braking, and it had become increasingly louder. I called Mazda corporate and they finally agreed to do a diagnostic at a nearby Mazda store when I mentioned I found tbs 04-005/15 on the brake issue and was taking the vehicle to another dealership for a brake check. The diagnostic technician report stated to replace rear brake pads to correct problem. It said the rear brakes had 4mm on outer pads and 1mm on inner pads, and front pads were at 8mm; it did not state if front brakes were also worn unevenly. It also said rear rotors were at 10mm and min was 8mm. I told corporate that it was unusual that rear brakes would wear unevenly and prior to front brakes, that there was no brake service light showing, that the noise was intermittent not constant and while driving more than braking. I also mentioned that I believed there was a defect in the braking system.

Why is my parking brake flashing in my Mazda CX 5?

The light flashes if the Electric Parking Brake (EPB) has a malfunction. If the light remains flashing even if the Electric Parking Brake (EPB) switch is operated, consult an Authorized Mazda Dealer as soon as possible.

What does a flashing parking brake light mean?

It illuminates to show that the parking brake or emergency brake is engaged and must be released before driving. If it remains lit after the parking brake is released or if it turns on and off intermittently while you're driving, it means you need to add brake fluid.

How do you turn off the electric parking brake on a Mazda CX 5?

Depress the brake pedal and press the AUTOHOLD switch to turn off the AUTOHOLD (AUTOHOLD standby indicator light and AUTOHOLD active indicator light in instrument cluster turn off).
