The thing is that it inconvenieces you as well as thieves. Whenever you have to take your wheels off for maintenance or repairs, it's an extra thing you have to do to get them off and put them on.

It's worse if you're changing a flat tire, because not only is it more difficult, but you're going to be trying to fix it and get off the freeway before someone crashes into you and your stopped car. Having changed a couple of flats on the freeway, I can tell you anything that slows you down will become an infuriating annoyance.

On the theft prevention side, any deterrent helps. Bear in mind that any security system can be overcome by someone. The point of stuff like this is that you want it to be hard enough for them to give up before they get your wheels.

Visible deterrents also imply invisible deterrents. If your car is in good shape, clean and shiny, kept locked when parked, has wheel-locks, etc., it shows that you care for and about your car, and implies that you have more then deterrent features that they can't see. A hidden GPS tracker, for instance. The more theft resistant your car looks, the less likely someone will be to try, even if they are prepared. If the car next to yours looks easier to steal from than yours, thieves will probably go there instead.

Your trade-off is going to be security versus convenience. Since you bought a brand new CR-V, I'm going to assume you may not be doing your own repairs and maintenance, so convenience may not be a big deal, especially if you can have AAA change flat tires for you instead of wanting to do it for yourself.

Where you live will make a big difference. I have lived in Orange County suburbs most of my life, and in the mountains more recently. In those areas wheel theft is not a common thing, so there is no way somebody who works on their own car like I do would ever consider wheel locks, because they just get in the way and don't provide any benefit. If you live in a more urban area, like downtown Los Angeles or Portland Oregon, you will definitely want to get wheel locks because cars do get vandalized and stolen in those areas.

Unfortunately, I'm going to say this place, or any online forum, is not the best place to ask this question. To know if you should get wheel locks or not, you should ask local independent mechanics around where you live. If they are comfortable leaving cars outside overnight most of the time, you definitely don't need wheel locks. If local mechanics will tell you they commonly replace stolen wheels, or repair cars that have been broken into, you will definitely need wheel locks. The mechanics that work in the area where you live are going to be the best experts for you to ask this question.

Do wheel locks help prevent theft?

Wheel locks only protect against the theft of tires, wheels, and rims. They do not protect against car theft. They are commonly confused with wheel chock locks and wheel lock clamps, which act as a tire “boot” to prevent vehicle theft.

Why does my Honda wheel lock?

The steering wheel locking mechanism is meant as an extra precaution when you're parked on an incline—just one of many safety features. In theory, if your brakes fail, the wheel lock should stop your car from rolling downhill into Lake St. Clair.

Do Hondas have wheel locks?

Wheel locks help provide inexpensive, dependable protection against wheel and tire theft. Keep your Honda genuine with these factory Honda wheel locks.

Where is the wheel lock key kept?

The key usually comes in a set which can be found with the spare tire or sometimes in the glove box. If the key is lost or gets broken somehow, the dealer or manufacturer can make a new one. It's a good idea to always make sure that you get your wheel lock key back whenever your wheels are removed.
