Good Morning Gents,

Has anyone found out what fluids we need to put in our differentials and transfer case / PTU? AMSOIL has no fluids recommended. Chilton online manuals has no 2015 available, but a 2014 is. I do not know if they changed anything? I do not want to pay $30 and be wrong.

I ask because I have done a lot of towing and I know it would be good to change out the fluids. But paying dealer prices is not on my to-do list. Any suggestions? I might swing by my dealer today and see if they can tell me what they use and what it costs. If I do, I will post.

I don't know, but I'm following this thread for the right answer.

PTU takes 75W-90 gear oil. The rear diff takes 70W-80 meeting MS 2395 and hydraulic fluid meeting MS-2155

PTU: 68210057AA for $16.50 each
Rear Diff: 68227765AA for $15.00 each

Okay, I did this part. Now I need someone to go get the torque specs for the drain plugs. I did not have time to wait for the guy to go get the numbers from service as I had to leave. I am a busy guy . IIRC the rear diff takes 1.6 or so quarts and the front takes just shy of one. I always end up spilling some so I got a second, just in case.

These are for MY VIN. There are two different rear diff fluids, one for the Trailhawk and one for the ADII, from what the guy was telling me.

I have never changed them, but I will in the next month or two. I have done a lot of 4LO and towing time, so after my 2,900 trip coming up I am going to put fresh fluids in and see what stuff looks like.

No one else able to get the torque specs?

Rear Differential Fill Plug: 26 Ft. Lbs.
PTU Fill Plug: 30 Ft. Lbs.
PTU Heat Shield: 10 Ft. Lbs.

My dealer provided these to me today when I picked up my new Mopar wiper blades.

Guys, I need to rely on our network here. Does someone either work at a dealer or have a better relationship than I do with one? I need the instructions for draining the rear diff and the PTU. I looked around yesterday under the Jeep. It looks like for the rear diff there are two fill plugs, one on each side. But I cannot find any drain plug. For the PTU, it is covered by the skid plates and could not find anything. I am pretty sure I did find the drain plug for the transmission, but not the fill plug.

Can someone help us out and pull the directions for fluid changes in the transmission, PTU and rear diff? Thanks!!

Just looked on Techconnect. There is no reference to drain plugs on either unit. They also only state one fill plug for the diff. I personally have never looked for a drain plug, so I really couldn't say if there is one or not. Chrysler also has no specified service interval for them. If I notice one in the air in the shop tomorrow, I will take a look and let you know.

Thanks brother! That is odd. I could see if I had no knowledge of this stuff, but having owned over a dozen trucks with specific fluid change intervals for severe service and heavy towing, it is surprising that the Jeep does not have such a thing. And having no instruction is odd. I know Ram did for my 2500, meaning front and rear diffs, transfer case and so on. So they are supposed to be sealed and good for life? No matter how good the parts are, there will be wear and shavings. One might think they should be flushed out? What if the vehicle is submersed in water?

Don't get me wrong, I agree with you. I hate these "sealed for life" units. Who's life??

We never had any Cherokees come into shop today. I took a look at mine in my garage at home and could not see any drain plug. Hopefully we will have come in tomorrow.

On my last vehicle (Explorer/Mountaineer at ~130k miles) the front diff had no drain plug so I got to pump it out, which wasn't any fun. In fact it was a PITA. The gear oil is so thick it isn't very easy to pump and the tube kept flying off from the pressure. You use a hand pump and fish the tube in from the fill hole...

Good luck!

I have done that in the past on people's vehicles. But it is not the preferred method. If that is the only choice we have on the Cherokee, then that is what I will do. I just want another opinion before proceeding.

I really hope they were smart enough to have a decent way to drain everything...be pretty silly to not be able to (easily) drain the fluids on a technically off-road capable vehicle

I am going to drive up on ramps this weekend if I get time and see if I can spot the PTU fill plug.

You cannot see the PTU fill plug unless you remove the Heat Shield. There is no drain.

Really? I thought I saw one. In the next two weeks I will be getting into it, I have not had time yet. The oil change is cake, it is the rear diff and PTU I am holding out for, hoping to do it all at one time.
