Is it wrong that I was rooting for Peter to end up with Karen? Jennifer Connelly sounds so fine. Focus, hombre. So I'm not quite ready yet to say SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING trumps Raimi's SPIDER-MAN 2 as the best live action wallcrawler movie ever. That there's watercooler talk about that is a palpable win for Sony. Me, I've always held that the best Spider-Man isn't the one where Peter is a grown-up in his late 20s and married to Mary Jane, but, rather, when he was 15 and awkward and uncool and dirt poor and had epic daily struggles with trying to fit in in high school versus caving in to his massive guilt complex and swingin' out to fight crime. 15-year-old Peter Parker, as served up by Lee and Ditko, was the one I found so accessible when I was a kid. And 15-year-old Peter is what we get in this movie.

Tom Holland's interpretation is the most faithful to the comic book version, in spirit and in execution. He's fantastic. He brings tremendous heart to the role. His Peter is naive and super-enthusiastic and is a spastic chatterbox. John Hughes, what? FERRIS BUELLER'S DAY OFF, what? FREAKS AND GEEKS, what? Director Jon Watts sure tried his durndest to channel those things. Lots of fun with Peter juggling his crazy Spidey escapades with the doldrums of high school and his crush on the cute captain (Laura Harrier) of the school's U.S. Academic Decathlon team.

By the way, the opening theme song got a big stinking grin out of me. It should sound very familiar to you, too.

Thankfully, counter to what the trailers implied, Iron Man is used sparingly, wasn't onscreen as much as I'd dreaded. Don't twist it, I love how RDJ plays Tony Stark, but I was concerned that he would hijack the movie. Stark is in it just enough, and, in fact, there's even significant development to his own personal story arc. And, by the end, Stark even learns a lesson from his protégé. His grumpy chauffer Happy (Jon Favreau) snags just as much or even more screen time, what with Stark tapping Happy as his liaison (read: buffer) to our hero-in-training who, post Civil War, persists in nagging via text as to when the next big mission is.

To drive home that Spidey is firmly entrenched in the MCU, the story opens in the aftermath of the devastating Avengers/Chitauri dust-up in New York. It's when we're made aware that there's such a thing as the Dept. of Damage Control, just in case you'd ever wondered who went around cleaning up after metahumans who had just destroyed cityscapes. We eyeball salvage contractor Adrian Toomes (Michael Keaton) who, for my money, is easily one of the top three or four villains in the MCU (along with Loki, the Kingpin, and Kilgrave). Toomes is a lunchpail crook, a blue collar guy just sticking it to the Man. I appreciate that he's neither campy nor does he harbor grandiose ambitions like taking over the world. ***Small SPOILER*** in this next sentence: He prefers to lay low under the radar even as he filched and peddled exotic thingamajigs from the detritus of various cape and cowl fighty fights. In Keaton's hands, Toomes is both incredibly menacing AND sympathetic.

By the way, someone in the movie - I think it was Ned - wore a shirt that had this on it and made me smile:

- "I lost an electron."
- "Are you positive?"

And I appreciate that they skipped Spidey's origin story.

Also, Karen sure is one bloodthirsty chick.

It's a diverse cast that work well together. My two stand-outs are Marisa Tomei and Jacob Batalon. Tomei's is a refreshing take on Aunt May who is so smoking hot that she gets hit on or ogled pretty much everywhere she goes. Batalon as Peter's best friend Ned provides plenty of sidekick humor, plus there's a puppy dog sweetness to the guy. Donald Glover shows up for two measly scenes, but you maybe shouldn't treat him like a throwaway character. Zendaya isn't in it as much as Happy is, but you and I suspect she'll play a more significant part in coming sequels.

Yeah, I think SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING runs neck in neck with Raimi's SPIDER-MAN 2, with SPIDER-MAN 2 maybe edging it out by a smidge. I loved the vibe of HOMECOMING, loved how the ol' webhead was updated to modern sensibilities while retaining his classic exaggerated bump of responsibility and little guy appeal. I dug how the high school elements, perfectly captured, served to anchor Peter's storyline. And it's easily the funniest Spidey movie (those PSAs!!).

Nitpicks? Some. Just like in WONDER WOMAN, the third act, specifically the final showdown, is a meh for me. That extended action beat was shot so murkily I had a hard time figuring out what was going on. Also, where was Peter's Spidey sense? Throughout the film, poor guy was getting smacked around. And ***SPOILERS*** again for these next two things: You can't tell me there was no casualty in that ferry incident, and the "MJ" drop felt forced.

Stick around for two end credit stingers. The second stinger happens to be one of the best ever.
