My niece Amelia has long, fine ringlets. The kind of curls that should be brushed only when they are wet and coated in a slippery conditioner. When you treat them just right, they are springy and glossy and as lively as only a six-year-old's hair can be. When you treat them wrong, they are a nightmare of tangles and tears. My son Gus has thick, almost-black hair. He wears it tight on the sides and long on top, like his favorite Real Madrid soccer players. And when it’s not conditioned properly, it feels like AstroTurf. I have thick, wavy hair that falls over my shoulders. It has a tendency to frizz at the hairline and the nape of my neck. But when I keep my hair healthy, hydrated, and just long enough, it has a pretty damn great texture.
Three humans, three different hair types. For under three bucks, this leave-in conditioner pretty much guarantees that all of us have a month of great hair (that’s how long a bottle lasts in my house).
The white lotion comes in an eco-green bottle that touts avocado and olive oils as the star ingredients. And if you turn the bottle over, the two natural oils are written, in plain view, on the ingredient list. But right at the top of the ingredient list (meaning it exists at a higher concentration than anything below it) is what I suspect to be the true star of this conditioner: dimethicone, a silicone that forms a smooth film over the cuticle to protect each strand from humidity and frizz. Now some of you may read that and think, BAD, since there has been some backlash against silicones in shampoos (some chemists say they may stick to the scalp and potentially clog follicles and slow growth), but you still definitely want them in frizz-busting conditioners (especially if you keep them away from the roots). And because this one comes in a squeeze bottle, it’s easy to control how much you are putting in your hair so you don’t weigh it down. Amelia’s curls require about a nickel-size blob; Gus needs even less — just a pea-size drop; and with a full quarter-size dollop, my hair is on its way to a glossy, smooth air-dry.
