Below is a selection of religious quotes, proverbs, philosophies, and tribal sayings which serve as guides to expressions of thanks. Additionally, while some religions rely on historical data or conversations, others and more indigenous groups such as the Maoris, Hawaiians, or Native Americans rely on the wisdom and philosophies of nature.

Yet no matter where the appreciation is derived, each contributes the fabric of life here on Earth.

Buddhist ‘Thank You’ Messages

In Buddhism, gratitude is often an internal manifestation before it is an external one. The following phrases from Buddha express that sentiment, even if they do not explicitly say the words, 'thank you.'

  • "Friendship is the only cure for hatred, the only guarantee of peace."
  • "We are shaped by our thoughts; we become what we think. When the mind is pure, joy follows like a shadow that never leaves."
  • "With our thoughts, we make the world."
  • "Be where you are, otherwise, you will miss your life."
  • "Let us rise up and be thankful, for if we didn't learn a lot at least, we learned a little, and if we didn't learn a little, at least we didn't get sick, and if we got sick, at least we didn't die; so, let us all be thankful."
  • "Every morning we are born again. What we do today is what matters most."
  • "In the end, only three things matter: how much you loved, how gently you lived, and how gracefully you let go of things not meant for you."
  • "If you light a lamp for somebody, it will also brighten your path."
  • “When you realize how perfect everything is you will tilt your head back and laugh at the sky.”
  • "If we fail to look after others when they need help, who will look after us?"
  • "Better than a thousand hollow words is one word that brings peace."
  • "Peace comes from within. Do not seek it without."

Christian ‘Thank You’ Messages

The Christian sacred text is comprised of the New and the Old Testaments in the Bible. Therein, 66 books describe life before and during the time of Jesus—God's son.

  • "I have not stopped giving thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers." — Ephesians 1:16
  • "I always thank God for you because of His grace given you in Christ Jesus." — Corinthians 1:4
  • "There is no fear in love: Perfect love casts out fear." — 1 John 4:18
  • "But thanks to God who gives us victory through our Lord Jesus Christ." — 1 Corinthians 15:57
  • "Rejoice always, pray continually, and give thanks in all circumstances."  — 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18
  • "I do not cease to give thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers." — Ephesians 1:16
  • "I thank my God in all my remembrance of you." — Philippians 1:3
  • "We always thank God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, when we pray for you." — Colossians 1:3

Hindu ‘Thank You’ Messages

There are four sacred texts called the Vedas in Hinduism. They are the Rig, Yajur, Sama, and Atharva.

Within them, they are divided into Samhita, Brahmana, Aranyaka, and the Upanishads. When someone says thank you with a Hindu prayer, they are also coming from a place of generosity.

  • "Gratitude is not only the greatest of all virtues but the parent of all others."
  • "Life, death, and rebirth are inevitable."
  • "Where there is joy, there is creation. Where there is no joy, there is no creation: know the nature of joy."
  • "Veda means knowledge and the Vedas are really an ocean of knowledge."
  • "He who sees all beings in his Self and his Self in all beings, he never suffers; because when he sees all creatures within his true Self, then jealousy, grief, and hatred vanish."
  • "There is enough in the world for everyone's need; there is not enough for everyone's greed."
  • "May God protect us, grant us wisdom's fruit; may we gain energy to know the Truth; may our intellects grow clear and bright; may we cherish no ill feelings toward anyone. Om, peace, peace, peace be unto all."
  • "As is your will, so is your thought; as is your thought, so is your deed; as is your deed, so is your life."
  • "A gift is pure when it is given from the heart to the right person at the right time and at the right place, and when we expect nothing in return."

Jewish ‘Thank You’ Messages

Although the Talmud is not a sacred text, it is the gathering of rabbis discussing the meaning of the Torah that can make it truly worthwhile. Some of the quotes are attributed directly to certain Rabbis.

  • "The highest form of wisdom is kindness."
  • "Every blade of grass has its angel that bends over it and whispers, 'Grow. Grow.'"
  • "A dream which is not interpreted is like a letter that is not read."
  • "Ingratitude to a human being is ingratitude to God." — Rabbi Shmuel Hanagid
  • "It is gratefulness which makes the soul great." — Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel
  • "When you teach your son, you teach your son's son."
  • "If you cannot be grateful for what you have received, then be thankful for what you have been spared." — Yiddish Proverb
  • "You can't put "thank you" in your pocket."
  • "What have you done for me lately is the ingrate's question." — Rabbi Joseph Telushkin
  • "If you have done a big kindness for your neighbor, let it be in your eyes a small matter. If your friend did you a small favor, let it be in your eyes a big favor." —  Avot d'Rabbi Nathan 41:11
  • "A person must be grateful to a place where he derived some benefit." —  B'reishit Rabbah 79:6
  • "Loving Kindness is greater than laws; the charities of life are more than all ceremonies."

Muslim ‘Thank You’ Messages

The Quran is the holy text of Islam. According to Muslims, the angel Gabriel revealed the word of (God) Allah to Muhammed, their prophet. The quotes below are from that text.

  • "If you give thanks, I will give you more."
  • "Truly Allah is bountiful towards the people, but most of them do not give thanks."
  • "And few of My servants are grateful."
  • "Call upon me, I will respond to you,"
  • "No one besides Allah can rescue a soul from hardship."
  • "All the praises and thanks be to Allah, Who has guided us to this, and never could we have found guidance, were it not that Allah had guided us."
  • "And he gave you all that you asked for, and if you could the blessings of Allah, never will you be able to count them."
  • "My success can only come from Allah. In Him, I trust, and unto Him, I look."
  • "All praise is due to Allah, by whose honour and Majesty, deeds of virtue are accomplished."
  • "Therefore, remember Me, I will remember you, and be thankful to Me, and do not be ungrateful to Me."
  • "And if ye were to count the Blessings of Allah, never would you be able to enumerate them."
  • "My Lord! Grant me the power and ability that I may be grateful for Your favor, which You have bestowed upon me and my parents, and that I may do righteous good deeds, such as please You, and make my offspring good."

Taoist ‘Thank You’ Messages

Laozi, or Lao Tzu, was the master and founder/philosopher of Taoism. It is based on the natural order of things rather than the conventions of society. The following quotes are his.

  • "When you realize nothing is lacking, the whole world belongs to you."
  • "When you are content to be simply yourself and don't compare or compete, everybody will respect you."
  • "Manifest plainness, embrace simplicity, reduce selfishness, have few desires."
  • "Nature does not hurry, yet everything is accomplished."
  • "A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step."
  • "Kindness in words creates confidence. Kindness in thinking creates profoundness. Kindness in giving creates love."
  • "Truthful words are not beautiful; beautiful words are not truthful. Good words are not persuasive; persuasive words are not good."
  • "Being deeply loved by someone gives you strength while loving someone deeply gives you courage."
  • "Because of a great love, one is courageous."
  • "From caring comes courage."
  • "If you would take, you must first give. This is the beginning of intelligence."
  • "The power of intuitive understanding will protect you from harm until the end of your days."

‘Thank You’ Messages from Other Religions

Many religions are so embedded inside the culture that they are inseparable—and when they are without a text, the line between culture and religion becomes indistinguishable.

  • "Abundance can be had simply by consciously receiving what has already been given." — Sufism
  • "Listen to the wind, it talks. Listen to the silence, it speaks. Listen to your heart, it knows." — Native American

Showing Gratitude

Gratitude is universal among all religions and beliefs. By sharing it with others, the legacy of those who came before us continues.

Post-planning tip: If you are the executor for a deceased loved one, giving your thank you's to those who have helped you isn't the only thing you have to deal with. Handling tough to handle both the emotional and technical aspects of their unfinished business without a way to organize your process. We have a post-loss checklist that will help you ensure that your loved one's family, estate, and other affairs are taken care of.
