That is during the time when Shankara reentered his own body from that of king during the times of debate with Ubhaya Bharathi, the wife of philosopher Mandana Misra.

Note: The one written here is a 17 stanza version of the stotram, however in some areas the number of stanzas can vary in between 13 stanza, 17stanza, and 25 stanza versions. But the essence of all is the same.
