Introduction

Day centres or day care centres in Ireland provide a range of social and rehabilitative services for older people and people with disabilities.

Day centres include centres that provide day activities, such as recreational and leisure facilities, and specialised clinic facilities that provide a combination of medical and rehabilitation services. Availability of services varies in different areas. Some day centres are provided directly by the Health Service Executive (HSE) and some are provided by other organisations on behalf of the HSE.

Access to day centres is by referral and the eligibility conditions vary from area to area.

From September 2022, young people with disabilities who are leaving school or rehabilitative training can defer their placement in a day service for up to 3 years. This means that they can explore other options while keeping their place in a day service.

Services in day centres and day care

The main purpose of day centres and day care is to help older people and people with disabilities to live in their communities and to promote independent living. They also provide a support to carers.

The range of services available varies widely and can include any or all of the following:

  • Rehabilitative training
  • Social skills for people with learning disabilities
  • Personal care
  • Health monitoring
  • Meals
  • Chiropody
  • Laundry
  • Advice for carers
  • Transport to and from day centres

Rates

There may be a small charge for transport and meals provided by day centres.

How to apply

Usually people are referred to day centres or day care services by their family doctor (GP) or their public health nurse. Day services may be recommended to people with intellectual disabilities or autism after an assessment of need.

Day and respite centre for the care of young adults with any disability

Preparing you for Transition

Marigold Centre is a state-of-the-art disability day care centre for young adults and a four room respite care facility in the heart of the conservation area, close to the sea front and centre of Southend.

The Marigold Centre, formally a family centre, is a beautiful period building in the conservation area and, after extensive conversion, is ideally suited for both disability day care and disability respite care use. The Marigold has been modeled on the successful Woodside disability day care centre, with a few additions. The main difference is the ability to offer respite care, along side day care, for students with a wide range of disabilities, including those who require nursing or personal care, have learning disabilities, physical disabilities, or sensory impairments.

There are four good-sized activity rooms including a large screen T.V. room, with all the electronic games, X box, Wii, etcetera. There are rooms dedicated to activities, arts and crafts, such as painting and pottery, generally making a mess, and of course, the chill out room, for having some quiet time. Howdens Kitchen Suppliers have fitting a state-of-the-art fully-accessible kitchen where we encourage cooking skills, and there are three fully-accessible bathrooms on the ground floor. Outside we have a lovely mature front garden for those with green fingers and a large activity garden at the rear to enjoy, with artificial grass for all year use. Upstairs, which is accessible either via a lift or stairs, we have four fully-accessible en-suite bedrooms for our respite guests.

The Marigold Centre comes with fully trained and friendly staff encouraging life skills, always there to help and take the very best care of all the students. Of course, in addition to a great building, the location of the Marigold enables easy access to Southend, just ten minutes away, as well as the cliffs and Southend seafront right on the doorstep. Marigold, just like Woodside will have its own vehicles, not just providing transport to and from the centre, but for trips during the day, such as just ride, bowling or an introduction to golf.
