UND Cardiac Ready Campus

On January 22, 2020, UND was awarded the designation of being a Cardiac Ready Campus.

As part of its Cardiac Ready Community Project, the North Dakota Health Department encouraged North Dakota’s colleges and universities to bolster their cardiac event readiness and heart disease awareness programs. This project included educating faculty, staff, and students on the risk of heart disease, screening them for conditions such as hypertension, and training them in both CPR and use of automated external defibrillator (AED) devices.

The CRC campaign focused on four distinct aspects of cardiac health and readiness: stroke, hypertension, heart attack, and CPR/AED training. To date, no college campus in North Dakota has earned the designation, making UND’s effort the first of its kind.

How long does it take to get a CPR certification?

Basic First Aid and CPR – This will take roughly an hour to finish, and it will last for three years. NRP – NRP certification takes no completion time since it's a self-paced program. This certification will last for two years.

How long does a first aid course take?

These courses generally take about one day, usually around 6 or 7 hours of tuition with both theoretical and practical elements. Following such a course, a first aider will be trained to deal with the major emergency situations, such as giving CPR, and dealing with people who are choking or bleeding severely.

Is CPR and first aid the same?

While CPR classes tend to focus on helping someone who is experiencing cardiac arrest, first aid classes tend to focus on all other emergency situations: cuts, fractures, choking and everything in between. Taking both of these classes can be extremely beneficial in the event an emergency situation arises.

How long is a first aid certificate valid?

Certificates for the purposes of first aid at work last for three years. Before their certificates expire, first-aiders will need to undertake a requalification course as appropriate, to obtain another three-year certificate.
