Applied regression analysis and other multivariable methods pdf

A complete mess.

I'm not sure what other ways to refer to this. If you're teaching out of this book, you need to reassess your methods.

Each section is a continuation of another section. Which may mean good things for an easy read from a teaching perspective, but it's an absolute nightmare for students.

From the student, "where did they get alpha from here"

"Well it's from the last section"

"But the last section derived it from rho and z"

"Well those are defined in the section before that"

If you're a teacher, be prepared for frustrated students that would rather turn to online sources than deal with flipping through 3 different sections of the book.

If you're a student be prepared to be frustrated that your teacher didn't bother to do his/her homework and find a more simplified text.

On top of that, the homework problems are just written lazily. Without giving away any spoilers here is an example problem from the text (not quoted because I don't want sued, but this is very common in the book)

5-9 Answer the following questions concerning statistical principle x, by referring to part x, y, z, in problem 5 of chapter 6

<"What? Why? Couldn't you just come up with a different problem? Why do I have to flip back x pages to get to some meaningless example? If you want me to use the same data set that's fine, but at least give me more information!">

a) Determine test 1, and test 1^2 and interpret results
b) Find an interval for rho and give result for null hypothesis.

<"So wait is that for each one? Hold on let me flip through 50 pages to get back to the other section...now which section is this explained in? Was the rho variable given in chapter 4 or chapter 6?...I guess I should devote more hours upon hours to just being able to translate this book">

The fun doesn't stop there. Just try the Ebook version. DRM loaded down, and still a positively oppressive price. With zero features added, no links to answers or citations, no example videos, and terrible scrolling and scaling to boot. This ebook is basically a copy paste from the publishers PDF version, and they put in chapters for you. Positively pathetic for the price you're probably paying for this book.

This is a terrible example of an academic text, and a great example of how academia is completely failing for the average student these days.

Price regardless this is an atrocity of a textbook.

Price included you're paying as much as you would be for most medical texts for this book for the hardcover ($246 at the time of the review). The publisher made the wonderful decision to charge almost as much for the ebook ($204 at the time of the review) and that's for a very poorly done copy paste version of a PDF document.

Your students deserve better than this for their money.

You limited time deserves better than this. Pick a better book, or convince your department it's time to move away from the textbook model of textbooks. This book leads to lost and confused students, who are going to come swarming to you hoping for all the answers.

If you're one of the poor chaps that's stuck with this book and it's mindless back and forth nature. I highly recommend this site to get yourself unstuck. Simple explanation abound that this book won't even touch on. 10 minutes on this site translates to hours inside this book. Now if we could only make your statistics department understand this.
